    Health And Safety Consultant

    Job description

    Key Responsibilities

    • Actively demonstrate H&S leadership and desired H&S behaviour;
    • At least 80% field attendance (20% in the office at most);
    • Continuously promote the Vopak’s H&S Policy and the project H&S objectives;
    • Be familiar with H&S legislation (incl. the Project H&S Specifications), stay abreast of developments therein, and monitor compliance therewith;
    • Be familiar with Vopak H&S requirements and monitor compliance therewith; with an emphasis on Vopak’s Fundamentals on Safety;
    • Be familiar with the Principal Contractor’s H&S Management Plan & System, stay abreast of developments therein, and monitor the implementation thereof, and compliance therewith;
    • Assist the H&S Manager with Principal Contractor H&S document reviews as directed;
    • Perform H&S monitoring, observations, inspections, and audits as directed by the H&S Manager;
    • Immediately report high risk deviations & non-conformances to the H&S Manager;
    • Verify that the Principal Contractor takes action to respond to H&S deviations & non-conformances by developing and implementing appropriate action plans & programmes;
    • Monitor the Principal Contractor’s implementation and compliance with, and the effectiveness of such action plans & programmes;
    • Identify successes & failures, make recommendations, identify training needs & opportunities, and offer advice to the H&S Manager on appropriate/required H&S programmes & initiatives to ensure the continued suitability, adequacy, and effectiveness of H&S management on the project;
    • Assist the H&S Manager with the establishment, maintenance, and analysis of project H&S statistical data;
    • Based on the analysis of the project H&S statistical data, identify and highlight successes, failures, and emerging trends, and recommend associated opportunities for the improvement of the project’s H&S performance to the H&S Manager;
    • Attend and participate in H&S meetings as directed by the H&S Manager and provide feedback to the H&S Manager following same;
    • Participate in incident investigations as directed by the H&S Manager, and monitor and follow up the reporting, recording & investigation of incidents by the Principal Contractor;
    • Develop & submit to the H&S Manager appropriate daily reports that accurately reflect observed conditions per area covered (incl. visual aids such as photos, diagrams, & sketches);
    • Develop & submit to the H&S Manager weekly reports that summarize the week’s activities and incudes an analysis of the data gathered during the week’s monitoring, observations, inspections, and audits,
    • Assist the H&S Manager with the development of monthly H&S performance reports, including H&S performance input into non-H&S reports;
    • Perform any other instructions as issued by the H&S Manager from time-to-time.

    Key qualities and skills

    • Computer literate
    • Good communication skills
    • Must have a valid driver’s license

    Qualification and Experience

    • 3+ years' oil & gas / petrochemical construction experience as safety officer
    • SAMTRAC or equivalent certificate
    • SACPCMP registration (or in process) as safety officer
    • Legal knowledge of the OHS Act and Construction Regulations (Legal Liability training preferred)
    • Relevant further H&S training & development (e.g. Risk Management, Incident Management, BBS, Inspection, First Aid, Fire Fighting, etc.)
    • Must be able to pass occupational medical fitness examination.
    • Valid driver’s licence
