    Site Engineering Manager

    Job description

    To provide an organised, cost-effective and efficient engineering and project management function at SAB Maltings-Caledon. Overall accountable for the utilisation of the appropriate systems and techniques, ensure the continued availability of efficient plant and equipment at minimum engineering and production unit costs. To ensure that the safety and legal responsibilities of the Company in terms of the OHS Act are satisfied.

    Key Roles & Responsibilities:

    • Accountable for compliance to legislation related to Occupational Health and Safety (OSH) and SABS standards:
      • To ensure that the safety and legal requirements of the OHS Act and NOSA are met, so as to improve the working environment and reduce the high risk of operating and maintaining high pressure equipment and vessels.
      • To take overall responsibility as Designated Competent Person in terms of the OHS Act 85 of 1993 General Machinery Regulation R2 Section 2.1 of the Installed Plant and equipment in the SAB Maltings Africa.
      • Compliance with ISO management systems, procedures and documentation
    • Overall accountability for plant and equipment maintenance:
      • Overall accountable for the quality of maintenance plans to drive efficiency and effectiveness
      • Ensure all resources required are available for the execution of the maintenance tasks on production lines
      • Challenge the quality of implementation of maintenance to drive reduced mean time to repair and downtime
      • Ensure the effective management and control of maintenance services contracts for corrective maintenance
    • Manage the interface between maintenance and production:
      • Agree with production regarding when lines can be shut for maintenance windows
      • Agree with production regarding planned ad hoc line maintenance stoppages
      • Close the feedback loop to production on compliance to the maintenance plan
      • Ensure that the maintenance schedules for production, engineering and other support teams are communicated and resolve any resource allocation issues
      • Provide feedback on the efficiency of routine maintenance tasks to the shift and engineering teams and highlight non-compliance with any issues that need to be addresse
      • Implement and entrench good asset management practices and standards
      • Ensure the integrity of maintenance workshops and tools by ensuring that good practices are applied
      • Manage all required asset care work complies with good asset care standards
      • Drive best practice and innovation
      • Overall accountable for efficient management of paycost, spares inventory and contractor cost:
      • Ensure that the balance between cost, quality and speed of delivery of spares is optimized across assets
      • Drive the reduce contractor costs, including the contracting out of maintenance tasks as well as services
      • Ensure optimized management of paycosts – including callouts and overtime
      • Overall accountable for proper utilisation of the Maintenance Management System:
      • Accountable for the maintenance system to ensure operational and data integrity and correct use thereof
      • Accountable that all maintenance work required is scheduled using the maintenance system only
    • Overall accountable for the provision of utilities to process departments:
      • Manage proficient provision of steam generation, power availability, refrigeration needs and compressed air.
      • Manage the effluent discharge to the municipality
      • Drive continuous improvement of utility usage to achieve KPI glide path
    • Overall accountable that CAPIN projects are planned and executed at maximum efficiency and minimum cost:
      • Ensure all projects are compliant to OEM specifications and in line with OHS Act
      • Effectively manage consultants and contractors wherever they are employed so that projects are commissioned on
      • time and meet the requirements they are designed for
      • Manage costs to budget without compromising quality, safety and effectiveness of implementation
    • Build seamless delivery of parts and services through effective supplier partnering:
      • Engage suppliers to identify opportunities for cost optimisation and improved service delivery and collaborate on supplier agreements (spares and services)
      • Ensure administration and management of the repair and service contracts for the recovery and maintenance of equipment, maintenance parts and assemblies
      • Monitor supplier service delivery and engage with Procurement and suppliers to resolve non-adherence
      • Effectively manage the planning of OEM resources to ensure optimal availability for planned and breakdown maintenance as well as holiday cover
    • Ensure efficient management of the spares and contractor costs:
      • Support the generation of zero-based budget for spares parts and contractor costs
      • Monitor and optimise contractor costs and utilisation
      • Monitor and report weekly on budget adherence and adjust plans accordingly
      • Escalate non adherence to fixed cost maintenance budget timeously
    • Optimise Team Performance:
      • Facilitate effective team dynamics
      • Implement performance management
      • Coach, guide and assist with training of all maintenance staff
      • Ensure a healthy industrial relations climate
      • Own the development of all artisans to align to maintenance strategy
      • Certify “License to Maintain” for artisans

    Qualifications:

    Graduate in an Engineering Discipline with G.C.C.(Factories)

    Experience:

    Minimum of 7 - 10 years’ of production or engineering experience with a proven record of maintenance performance

    Process Manager

    Job description

    The Process Manager is accountable for provision of technical expert service to the vertical operations, supporting the development and deployment of the quality and operational goals of the strategy.

    Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities:

    • Supports and co-ordinates the development and deployment of the vertical operations strategy;
    • Supports the disciplined execution of standard work practices at both the plant and the Zone level;
    • Supports the evaluation of potential new barley varieties, process planning and adjustments;
    • Identifies cross functional/discipline and/or other business best practice opportunities as well as external benchmarking from other industries or technology applications for transfer to vertical operations;
    • Identifies innovation opportunities with specific focus on value add cost efficiencies, throughput and quality;
    •  Performs VA process savings oversight;
    • Support s malting’s performance improvement by conducting and leading performance optimisation initiatives via process levers (i.e. time, temperature, airflow etc.);
    • Defines, maintains and improves process standards and co-ordinates and oversees process experimentation;
    • Provides problem solving support to plants when required;
    • Co-ordinates shared learning’s and the identification and deployment of global and zone best practices;
    • Conduct s and co-ordinate level 2 verification and compliance audits;
    • Support s malting skills development programs and capacity building initiatives;
    • Evaluates and recommends/supports regional capital expenditure requests;
    • Accountable for decisions on out of spec barley deliveries in liaison with plant level Maltster, ZBS & supplier with respect to quality and cost risk;
    • Anticipates the quality risks of out of specification barley and mitigates the implications by ensuring a documented response protocol;
    •  Supports variables cost drivers optimisation initiatives- supports continuous improvement strategy for utility usages and efficiencies to achieve global and regional KPI glide paths, including investment strategy;
    • Accountable for overall process oversight and optimisation to achieve malt in spec;
    • Accountable for annual evaluations of barley crop year.

    Requirements:

    • A Bachelors of Science degree in Biological sciences, Chemistry or Chem Eng.
    • Must be an experienced Maltster with a minimum of the IBD master Brewer qualification or equivalent
    • QC experience and a good understanding of laboratory methodology
    • Expert knowledge of malt quality on brewing performance
    • Minimum of 10 years work experience with 3 to 5 years spent at senior level in a operational or a technical role in the malting environment
    • Strong problem solving skills, with analytical and conceptual thinking coupled with a good knowledge of experimental designs
