    Occupational Health and Safety Officer

    About the job

    Duties/Pligte

    • Promoting compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act and all other statutory regulations at the Stellenbosch, Tygerberg, Worcester and Bellville campuses of Stellenbosch University;
    • Providing safety guidance and internal consulting service to staff members appointed as per the OHS Act and regulations;
    • Conducting safety inspections in and around all University buildings as required;
    • Conducting audits as per legislation;
    • Conducting hazard identification and risk assessments;
    • Conducting incident investigations as required;
    • Completing and submitting recommendations and safety concerns to the senior safety officer;
    • Attending Health and Safety Committee meetings as required;
    • Ensuring that all relevant safety training is coordinated as per the OHS Act and its regulations;
    • Ensuring that the training provided maintains our internal quality standards;
    • Maintaining the high standard of requisite recordkeeping;
    • Assisting with policy formation and procedures as required;
    • Giving guidance to relevant stakeholders that appoint contractors to adhere to construction regulations;
    • Conducting safety audits / site visit audits on construction projects;
    • Assisting with the legal appointment of OHS officers as per the OHS Act and its regulations as required;
    • Supporting emergency evacuation drills as required and assisting with the preparation of emergency evacuation plans;
    • Promoting the Department's vision, mission, and goals.

    Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes

    • SAMTRAC/NEBOSCH certificate;
    • Three years' experience in implementing and managing safety functions and programmes;
    • Sound knowledge of construction safety requirements;
    • Sound knowledge of safety legislation, policies, and procedures;
    • The ability to work independently within the scope of the position.

    Recommendation/Aanbeveling

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
    • Excellent computer literacy (MS Office, Outlook, Excel);
    • Effective planning, problem-solving, decision-making and time management skills, and root cause analysis;
    • Accurate record-keeping skills;
    • Organised with good interpersonal relationship skills;
    • Proven experience in the planning of schedules and budgets;
    • Previous experience with managing training

    Senior Lecturer / Lecturer: Hydrogeophysics

    Duties/Pligte

    • Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate modules in geohydrology, groundwater exploration and introductory courses in geology, as required;
    • Planning and supervision of under- and postgraduate field work and administration of modules;
    • Supervision of research projects and postgraduate students on at least masters level;
    • Conducting research and publication thereof in international journals relevant to the broader research field;
    • Obtaining research funds from external sources;
    • Service delivery at departmental level.

    Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes

    • PhD in Earth Sciences, with a focus on geohydrology;
    • Demonstrated knowledge of field-based geohydrology, groundwater exploration and/or groundwater numerical modelling;
    • Publications in international journals in the relevant field commensurate with experience;
    • Proven track record of teaching at the tertiary level (lecturer or teaching assistant pending the level of appointment);
    • Good verbal and written communication skills in English.

    For Appointment As Lecturer

    • Demonstrated knowledge of field-based geohydrology, groundwater exploration and/or groundwater numerical modelling;
    • A record of active research and research dissemination, e.g., through presentations at conferences;
    • Experience with groundwater modelling software such as, MODFLOW, MODPATH, FEFLOW, or finite element/finite difference modelling methods.

    For Appointment As Senior Lecturer

    • Evidence of a sustained publication record in high-quality international journals;
    • Proven ability to secure external funding;
    • Experience in aquifer testing, aquifer delineation and groundwater exploration using geophysical methods;
    • Proof of successful postgraduate supervision on at least master's level;
    • Evidence of working in multidisciplinary research projects and active collaboration.

    Applicants invited for interviews will be expected to present a lecture on their recent research and complete a written exercise intended to evaluate their hydrogeology knowledge and written communication skills.
    Recommendation/Aanbeveling

    • Post-doctoral or appropriate academic/industrial research experience;
    • Teaching experience in geohydrology and/or hydrogeophysics;
    • Good communication skills in Afrikaans.
