    Lecturer: Extended Curriculum Programme

    Role Clarification & Key Performance Areas

    • The successful candidate will join a dynamic and supportive Faculty dedicated to teaching and research, as well as to overall student development. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated and willing to make a significant contribution to the development of the Faculty.
    • The Statistics and Population Studies Department is hosted in the Faculty of Natural Sciences. In 2018, the department started an industry directed MSc in Statistical Sciences with specialisation in Data Science. Consider joining our new initiative and help train the Statisticians, Data Analysts and Data Scientists of the future.

    A vacancy exists in the department for a contract Lecturer to teach Statistics in the Extended Curriculum Programme. This is one-year contract, but may be renewed depending on  funding. In addition to the teaching responsibilities outlined below, participation in research activities is encouraged, provided it does not interfere with teaching duties, and off-campus research activities should not be scheduled to coincide with academic term times.

    • Facilitate learning at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Statistics/Data Science
    • Conduct research and publish on topics related to Statistics/Data Science
    • Undertake undergraduate and postgraduate supervision
    • Provide academic leadership
    • Undertake curriculum development and assessment
    • Undertake community/industry engagement and outreach

    Minimum Requirements

    • MSc in Statistics or Data Science or Mathematical Statistics
    • Demonstrated teaching experience at the undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels, in the field of Statistics or Data Science
    • Currently registered for a PhD in Statistics or Data Science or Mathematical Statistics
    • A record of successful postgraduate supervision at the honours level
    • A record of quality peer reviewed publications, in the field of Statistics, Applied Statistics or Data Science or proof of peer reviewed technical reports submitted in industry
    • Proven expertise in applying complex statistical and data science techniques in statistical packages such as SAS, R and/or Python

    Professor / Associate Professor (Science Education)

    • The Faculty of Education’s vision is to advance excellence in teaching and scholarship towards a more critically informed and socially engaged citizenry. In this regard, it is creatively responding to national imperatives for education and training in the 21st century.
    • As part of its promotion of the scholarship of teaching and learning, the Faculty seeks to appoint a Professor / Associate Professor in Science Education within the School of Science and Mathematics Education.

    Key Performance Areas

    The successful incumbent will be highly motivated and willing to make a significant contribution to the development of the Faculty. He/ She will be responsible for the following key performance areas with different emphasis in each area depending on the level of appointment:

    • Facilitate learning at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Science Education
    • Conduct research and publish in the field of Science Education
    • Construct a coherent research agenda consistent with the broad research goals of Science Education and within the Faculty
    • Promote and support research activities in the School of Science and Mathematics Education including applications for funded research, and cooperate with SSME and the Science Learning Centre for Africa in research initiatives

    • Provide academic leadership
    • Curriculum development and assessment
    • Scholarship of engagement for societal impact
    • Serve on committees devoted to the development of the Science Education and faculty objectives

    Minimum Requirements

    Minimum Requirements (for appointment at the rank of Professor)

    • A PhD in Science Education or equivalent
    • A strong academic record, with extensive experience in facilitating learning and teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the field of Science Education
    • A strong track record of quality academic research
    • A record of successful postgraduate supervision of Masters and PhD students
    • Evidence of expertise, national standing, and international recognition in his/her discipline.
    • The integration of community engagement with learning, teaching and research
    • Leadership experience at both departmental and faculty levels

    Minimum Requirements (for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor)

    • A PhD in Science Education or equivalent
    • Demonstrated experience in facilitating learning and teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the field of Science Education
    • A track record of quality academic research with at least 10 DHET accredited publications related to the field of Science Education
    • A record of successful postgraduate supervision of Masters and PhD students
    • Evidence of expertise and national standing  in his/her field of research.
    • The integration of community engagement with learning, teaching and research
    • Leadership experience at departmental and faculty levels

    Recommendation for Professor level (in addition to the minimum requirements)

    • A NRF rating would be considered an added advantage

    Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer (Mathematics Education)

    • A PhD in Mathematics Education or a related filed 
    • Demonstrated experience in facilitating learning and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
    • A strong research and academic publications record 
    • An excellent record of successful postgraduate supervision
    • Experience in curriculum development and transformation
    • Experience in leading or participating in and securing research funding for research projects
    • The integration of community engagement with learning and teaching, and research
    • Demonstrable scholarly standing and involvement at least at national level

    Minimum Requirements (for appointment at the rank of Senior Lecturer):

    • A relevant PhD in Mathematics Education or a related field
    • Demonstrated experience in facilitating learning and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
    • A good research and publications record (comprising relevant peer reviewed and/or accredited journal articles, books or book chapters in reputable publications)

    Senior Lecturer/Lecturer: Sedimentology and Petroleum Geosciences

    Role Clarification & Key Performance Areas

    • The Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of the Western Cape is internationally recognised for its learning, teaching, and research excellence. The Faculty comprises nine academic departments, a School of Pharmacy and several world-class research institutes and Centres. The Faculty offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in the major scientific disciplines and a professional degree in Pharmacy.
    • The Department of Earth Sciences offers degree programmes in Applied Geology and Environmental & Water Sciences. The successful candidate will join the Applied Geology section of the department, adding expertise in sedimentology and petroleum geosciences to compliment and extend existing expertise in sedimentology, petroleum geoscience, and sequence stratigraphy.

    The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key performance areas:

    • Facilitate learning and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Applied Geology
    • Conduct research and publish in petroleum geosciences

    For the post of Senior Lecturer, the following minimum requirements shall apply:

    • PhD or equivalent in the field of sedimentology or petroleum geology
    • Demonstrated experience in facilitating learning in the field of sedimentology or petroleum geology.
    • A record of quality peer reviewed publications in the field of petroleum geology.
    • A record of successful postgraduate supervision at the Masters and/or PhD level in petroleum Geosciences.
    • The integration of community engagement for societal impact with learning and teaching and/or research
    • Experience in petroleum geosciences would be an added advantage.

    For the post of Lecturer, the following minimum requirements shall apply:

    • MSc and registered for a PhD in Petroleum Geosciences with a clear plan for completion.
    • Experience in teaching undergraduate and/or postgraduate courses in sedimentology and petroleum geosciences.
    • Evidence of producing relevant high-quality peer-reviewed -accredited conference proceedings and/or publications.
    • Successful postgraduate research supervision at Honours level.
    • Evidence of community engagement with learning and teaching and/or research.

    Manager: Campus Protection Services

    Role Clarification & Key Performance Areas 

    We seek a skilled individual to plan, organize and manage the Campus Protection Services (CPS) functions; to create and maintain a safe and secure working, learning and research environment through the optimal use of resources, systems and people in order to ensure compliance with legislation, policies and procedures.

    The Manager: CPS reports directly to the Director: Risk and Compliance and will be responsible for but not limited to:

    • Physical Security & Operational Management of the University's Campus Protection Services department comprising in-house and outsourced resources. Understand the unique role that CPS play in a complex and diverse environment and manage appropriately in various contexts. Manage the planning and control of allocated budgets;
    • Governance and Compliance in enforcing and monitoring compliance with policies, procedures & legislation. Report deviations and implement necessary corrective actions or controls. Manage services and suppliers in accordance with SLA's. Analyses statistical data and reports and prepare risk assessments and mitigation plans accordingly;
    • Stakeholder Management & Liaison in building effective working relationships throughout the campus to ensure the participation of the University community in the division's crime prevention efforts; serves as the liaison with campus leadership, students, staff and external agencies; represents the University in formal meetings with outside organisations on matters dealing with security and protection services;
    • People and Resource Management in motivating, developing and training, and directing people as they work; planning and managing the procurement and logistics of CPS, to ensure that the team has all the necessary resources to work effectively while emulating the values of the University. 
    • Design and amend policies and business processes to support the role of CPS. Preparation of set reports and ad hoc reporting to management and various stakeholders. Foster relationships with stakeholders and present the University on various governance structures and platforms.

    Minimum Requirements

    • Relevant Security Management related Degree (NQF 7) or equivalent  
    • 5 years of management experience
    • 7 years of proven work experience managing a broad range of Security Operations, Investigations and in Traffic related environments
    • Valid driver's license (08/EB)
    • Valid PSIRA Grade A
    • Clear criminal record 
    • Fully conversant with MS Office packages
    • Knowledge of relevant Physical Security equipment, policies, procedures, precedents, and strategies to promote effective security operations for the protection of people, property, and instructions
    • Knowledge of Criminal Procedures, Court procedures, SAPS Operations, Minimum Physical Security Standards (MPSS), Minimum Information Security Standards (MISS) and government regulations.                                                                                                             •
    • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services
    • Knowledge of relevant legislation, principles and processes
    • Investigative and analytical techniques, procedures and requirements
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

    The following would be advantageous:

    • Previous senior managerial experience in a campus security environment.
    • Qualification in Security Management, Law, Risk Management, Events Managements and Emergency or Disaster Management
    • Preferably, Seven years of related management experience in law enforcement, higher education security, government or corporate environment
