    Critical Facilities Engineer - Edge Operations

    Description

    European Data Center Edge Operations is seeking a passionate, results oriented engineer to drive operational excellence in its colocation based data center operations. This position serves as a technical resource to support Amazon Web Services (AWS) within its geographically distributed Edge Operations. The position will drive overall availability and reliability to meet or exceed the defined service level expectations of data center operations.
    The Critical Facilities Engineer will be responsible for working with Biz development on site qualification and selection. In addition the engineer will be responsible for working with the Colo providers to oversee the operation and maintenance of all electrical, mechanical, and HVAC equipment in multiple colocation data centers. This equipment supports mission-critical servers and networking equipment with high uptime expectations. The Critical Facilities Engineer will identify and drive projects to maintain high reliability and performance while keeping operating costs in facilities at a minimum. Where appropriate, the engineer will drive innovation cooperatively with the colocation facility to reduce operational costs. A strong sense of ownership will be demonstrated for this position.
    The Critical Facilities Engineer is Amazon’s front line technical subject matter leader when it comes to hands-on electrical and mechanical equipment operations and troubleshooting. They will work with the Colo provider and Biz Development to ensure the ongoing maintenance and operations of Data Center Operation’s Mission Critical Facilities, which includes stand-by diesel generators and related fuel systems, 3 phase electrical systems that include but not limited to switchgear, UPSs, PDUs, wet cell batteries and associated systems, CRAC, centrifugal chillers, cooling towers/water chemical system, air handlers and associated systems, pumps, & motors.

    • Please note that this role will require 60% travel around the EMEA area

    Responsibilities

    • Supervise, advise and consult with Colocation operators performing servicing or preventive maintenance.
    • Assist in performing root cause analysis for operational issues.
    • Perform periodic on site assessments and audits of operations, electrical, and mechanical systems
    • Supervise the design and implementation of retrofits of existing facilities
    • Qualify new sites for new deployments
    • Drive operational excellence in all data center sites
    • Perform first level trouble-shooting for facility and rack level events.
    • Approval of all CMs (Change Management Tasks) to enable changes and maintenance at sites.
    • Attending weekly calls with both TPMs and CAD designers, designing and retrofitting new and existing cages within our EMEA edge space.
       

    Basic Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or relevant discipline + 3 years of post degree work experience.
    • Alternate to the engineering degree - 10+ years of maintenance/design experience
    • Ability to demonstrate in depth technical excellence in the design, maintenance and operation of critical electrical and HVAC systems
    • Thorough understanding of thermodynamic assessments of cooling system capacity vs projected heat load
    • Ability to deep dive electrical lineups including electrical load/coordination studies to assess for ongoing operational risks and failure modes
    • Ability to oversee multiple geographically separated locations including up to 60% travel
    • Good verbal and written communication skills.
    • Good attention to detail.
    • Ability to prioritize in complex, fast-paced environment

    Preferred Qualifications

    • 5+ years Data Center Design/Operations experience or other experience in 24X7 mission critical industries/facilities
    • Masters Degree in EE or ME or PE licensure
    • Knowledge of Data center security standards and requirements
    • Good leadership and organizational skills.
    • Fundamental knowledge of network design and layout as well as low voltage (copper/ fiber) cabling.

    A Customer Service Manager (CS Manager) sets the vision, direction, and culture of their teams by managing individual and team performance expectations and goals, providing individual coaching feedback sessions, maintaining singular focus on ensuring and improving customer satisfaction, monitoring real time service levels and schedule adherence, and serving as leaders and point of contact for escalated contact resolutions.

    Overall Responsibilities Include
    People Management

    • Leading and developing a team of 6 Team Managers and 45-50 associates; responsible for the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of the team.
    • Identifying and eliminating barriers to accuracy, productivity, and quality.
    • Carrying out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with AWS (Amazon Web Services™) policies and procedures; additional responsibilities include interviewing, training and motivating employees; planning, assigning and directing work; rewarding and disciplining employees; and effective conflict resolution.
    • Communicating policies to associates and become the primary information source for staff; following-up to ensure compliance and consistency; taking corrective action as necessary and documenting the issue and actions taken.
    • Owning and driving performance metrics with the team, to include the use of a Quality Assurance program to "Move the needle"

    Project Management

    • Solving complex customer service issues and proactively heading off negative service trends.
    • Understanding and correctly utilizing resources provided by internal systems, departments, policies, and procedures.
    • Development, analysis and improvement of new strategies and procedures. The CS Manager will have the ability to develop, plan, and implement short- and long-range goals
    • Developing and achieving performance goals and objectives in order to achieve customer promise expectations
       

    Basic Qualifications

    • Bachelors Degree
    • 2-4 years relevant experience managing 20-25 customer service associates
    • Direct experience in Contact Center Operations (Customer Service, Sales, or Collections)
    • Demonstrated history of improving customer experience / contact interaction
    • Strong oral (speaking, listening, interpretation) and written communication skills.
    • Ability to be flexible in shift assignments and work areas.
    • Able to work in an ambiguous, internet-speed environment.
    • Absolute passion for ensuring a great customer experience with every contact.
    • Strong technical analysis skills; you are someone who wants to dive into the numbers and seeks to understand

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Knowledge of Six Sigma/Lean Processes
    • Project Management certification
    • Exceptional skills in data manipulation and analysis
    • Demonstrated history delivering results in cross functional environments - ability to drive organizational change using sound reasoning backed up by relevant data in a well prepared business briefing
    • Experience managing other managers
