    Associate Professor / Senior Researcher / Researcher

    Duties/Pligte        

    • Providing conceptual, strategic, and visionary leadership for the energy research team, with special reference to research that is aimed at publications;
    • Publication of research in recognised, peer-reviewed journals, as well as in chapters of books;
    • Developing joint research proposals with members of the energy research team and research partners in South African, African, and international research institutions;
    • Co-leading project reports and reporting;
    • Participating in the teaching programme, including guest lectures, and (co-)convening one of the one-week modules that forms part of the CST's teaching programmes;
    • Contributing to the supervision of postgraduate students; 
    • Contributing at least 10% of the time to supporting CST institutional functions and participating in CST seminars, events, and staff meetings; 
    • Leading and supporting processes that foster interactions with a variety of stakeholders in the energy sector concerned with issues of Just Energy Transition, energy governance, energy poverty and energy policy in Southern Africa, including researchers, practitioners, decision makers from the private and public sector, and community members across multiple scales;
    • Collaborating with local and international research partners to conduct research and deliver multi-country energy studies that will facilitate cross-learning and policy-influencing evidence;
    • Collaborating with University colleagues from other departments to strengthen multi-disciplinary research and overall institutional outputs.
       

    Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes        

    • PhD  in energy studies or a related field, with a strong social sciences background;
    • Specialist knowledge about renewable energy policies and technologies in Southern Africa;
    • An extensive publication record in the areas of energy access and use, energy poverty, energy policy implementation and energy transitions;
    • At least five years' experience in energy research;
    • Experience in compiling fundraising proposals;
    • Experience in report writing;
    • Experience in coordinating and managing international research teams;
    • Experience and a desire to work in participatory interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary environments;
    • Willingness to secure ongoing funding to support the position; as well as those of more junior researchers at CST;
    • A track record of being involved in projects / research that seeks to advance actionable research, especially in relation to enhancing more equitable outcomes of sustainability interventions;
    • Experience in academic teaching at a range of levels, including engagement with course development;
    • A track record of involvement in community and policy service rendering in a wider community.

    Minimum Requirements: Researcher

    • An established academic career;
    • At least one co-authored publication;
    • PI, Co-PI or collaboration with a PI to submit funding proposals to raise research funding;
    • Some experience in  teaching assistance and course coordination support;
    • Experience in convening or co-convening courses or training activities in environmental science, sustainable development, social-ecological systems, and related subjects at undergraduate and postgraduate level;
    • Experience in running stakeholder workshops or policy engagement processes;
    • National recognition, e.g., NRF rating or serving on national scientific boards.

    Minimum Requirements: Senior Researcher

    • An established academic career;
    • At least ten publications with some as first/only author;
    • PI (or Co-PI) on one or more grants (small or large), or de facto PI (i.e., assistant to a PI) on a large grant;
    • Having at least one Master's graduate, and one or more PhDs enrolled;
    • Some teaching experience as, e.g., (co-)convenor of a course, course moderator, and/or in delivering lectures on one or more modules;
    • Evidence of institutional leadership and services activities (both internal and external), e.g., thesis examination, course moderation, journal reviewer, service on institutional committees;
    • Experience in running stakeholder workshops or policy engagement processes;
    • National recognition, e.g., NRF rating or serving on national scientific boards.

    Minimum Requirements: Associate Professor

    • An established academic career;
    • At least 20 publications with some as first/only author;
    • PI on a large research grant involving multiple team members, or on multiple smaller grants, plus co-PI or collaborator on raising other grants;
    • Multiple completed Master's and one or more PhD's;
    • Leadership experience in teaching and training in, e.g., programme leadership, course evaluation, as well as in delivering lectures at undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
    • Substantial institutional leadership and services activities (both internal and external), e.g., serving on University committees, institutional leadership roles, editorial boards of journals, lead roles in conference organisation;
    • Substantial experience in running stakeholder workshops or policy engagement processes, including media contributions and policy work;
    • National and international recognition, e.g., NRF rating secured, serving on national or international scientific advisory boards.

    Director: Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies

    Duties/Pligte        

    • Overall management of the Centre, including academic-, financial-, human resources- and strategic management;
    • Liaising with government, industry and academic partners;
    • Applying for funds and projects to support the activities in renewable energy at Stellenbosch University, focusing on research and training;
    • Teaching and conducting research in a field of, or closely related to, renewable energy;
    • Postgraduate supervision and mentoring of next generation researchers within the renewable energy area;
    • Establishing inter-disciplinary research initiatives within the renewable energy area and related disciplines;
    • Promoting knowledge transfer in terms of publications, policy briefs, products and commercialisation.


    Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes        

    • A relevant doctoral degree, OR under exceptional circumstances a master's degree in renewable and/or sustainable energy from a reputable  academic university with at least five years' experience in the field;
    • An experienced researcher, or an academic with a strong background in research in a field closely associated with renewable energy;
    • Demonstrated experience in managing preferably research activities and research projects, with the required knowledge and experience;
    • Proven experience in managing research funds and/or contracts, and a track record of soliciting funding for research and development projects;
    • Demonstrated strategic leadership, the ability to think strategically and a history of successful implementation of strategy;
    • Support the ethos of the University with our two main activities being research and training;
    • A very good networker with established networks in the renewable energy sector, with both public and private roleplayers;
    • Evidence of deal brokering and concluding agreements that contribute to third-stream income or other income streams;
    • Good people skills and the ability to effectively manage people;
    • Good communication and teaching skills.

    Lead IT Solutions Architect

    Duties/Pligte        

    • Engaging with senior levels of leadership through clear communication, appropriate levels of context and explanation;
    • Coordinating, managing and motivating the team of (virtual or directly reporting) solutions architects and analysts;
    • Analysing and reporting on industry and technology trends by supplying guidance on how it will impact the institutional opportunities as well as the risks;          
    • Ensuring that the solution or other outcomes are aligned to the objectives of the practice, Division, business owner or University;       
    • Ensuring that ICT architecture governance, principles and standards are adhered to at all times;
    • Ensuring that the solution design is transitioned to the project or other team(s) members in a smooth and effective manner;

    Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes        

    • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems (or a relevant field); or,            
    • If not graduated, at least seven years' or more work experience in IT architecture with the appropriate certifications;          
    • More than five years' experience as a solutions architect with experience in developing reference architecture, principles, and standards;         
    • More than five years' experience in leading teams;         
    • Effective communication and collaboration skills to coordinate projects and deliverables across IT and business;          
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;         
    • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills;

    Manager: Academic Programmes

    Duties/Pligte        

    • Management responsibilities: Directly managing the undergraduate and postgraduate managers and the contractors supporting them:
    • Tasking, reviewing, adjusting and monitoring the activities and workload of the undergraduate and postgraduate managers;
    • Performance management of the undergraduate and postgraduate managers;
    • Reviewing and continuously improving the effectiveness of all academic administrative processes;
    • Providing status reports on the activities of the undergraduate and postgraduate managers;
    • Planning resource loading of the undergraduate and postgraduate managers;
    • Assisting the undergraduate and postgraduate managers during peak times;
    • Identifying additional resource(s) to contract in if required.


    Postgraduate management of the Department's PhD students:

    • Managing the admissions process of PhD students;
    • Managing the PhD proposal acceptance process;
    • Managing the PhD examination process;
    • Maintaining the PhD student data on internal systems and the annual calendar of PhD events;
    • Optimising and integrating the management of PhD students into existing postgraduate processes as part of the overall management optimisation process.


    Departmental marketing:

    • Responsible for the recruitment of postgraduate students, utilising the relevant postgraduate managers and coordinators of all postgraduate programmes in the Department;
    • Responsible for the marketing and recruitment of short course programmes by using the relevant postgraduate manager;
    • Responsible for the recruitment of undergraduate students by using the relevant undergraduate manager and coordinator. This includes marketing the programme, school campaigns, phone marathons, email communication, Open Day and Winter School coordination, as well as a social media presence;
    • Marketing to alumni and industry by interacting with staff and the chairperson. This includes organising the Department's participation in the Faculty industry open day, the alumni database, and social media presence;
    • Being the liaison in the Faculty's Marketing Committee, representing the Department.

    Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes        

    • Bachelor's and postgraduate qualification, with at least five years' relevant experience in academic programme management, OR a BEng with at least five years' experience in process improvement and / or project or programme management in a business environment;
    • Previous management experience;
    • Past administrative experience of undergraduate or postgraduate programmes;
    • Planning, organising and prioritising skills;
    • The ability to work under pressure;
    • Intermediate-level skills in MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Teams;
    • Intermediate-level skills in cloud computing, including MS SharePoint;
    • Interpersonal skills and an engaging personality;

    Director: Academic IT

    Duties/Pligte        

    • Formulating and implementing strategy and policy related to the Academic IT portfolio, such as the IT Digital strategy. Providing input to strategy and policy in related areas, such as the Strategy for Teaching and Learning;
    • Leadership and management of the Academic IT team;          
    • Establishing and maintaining the capacity and expertise to ensure effective service delivery: recruiting and training staff, strengthening partnerships, and managing resources;         
    • Improving access to systems services and infrastructure, in particular storage and HPC;          
    • Building, improving and maintaining relationships with academics and students;         
    • Establishing and strengthening partnerships with other professional service divisions at SU, as well as with computer systems, software and service vendors;          
    • Developing and managing internal service level agreements with the customers Divisions and with students;         
    • Assisting the Chief Director: IT per the outcomes required of the Academic IT Division/Unit;        
    • Guiding and facilitating selection and procurement of cost effective fit-for-purpose solutions (equipment, software and services) in the portfolio, starting from needs analysis, requirements gathering, procurement processes to contract negotiations, implementation management and ongoing service delivery, including planning for and ensuring sustainability;         
    • Identifying and managing risks;       
    • Financial planning and budgeting, and expenditure control in the Academic IT portfolio;       
    • Promoting regional and national cooperation;        
    • Expanding cooperation with other universities;       
    • Facilitating and enhancing communication with the senior management of the University and all stakeholders.

    Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes        
    Qualification :

    • An appropriate NQF 8 qualification (four-year bachelour's degree; honour's degree, postgraduate diploma) in Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Science and / or related fields, AND at least ten years' proven experience in a senior IT management position or similar role; OR 
    • An appropriate NQF 9 qualification (master's degree) in Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Science and / or related fields, AND eight to ten years' proven experience in a senior IT management position or similar role;
    • A good understanding of one or more of the academic functions in a higher education context (learning and teaching, research, and engagement); 
    • Excellent at building and maintaining good stakeholder relationships; 
    • Excellent at building and maintaining value adding vendor partnerships; 
    • Customer-centric and approachable in order to build a positive rapport between IT and its stakeholders (i.e., staff and students); 
    • Excellent analytic, technical and people skills for leading a team that supports online teaching and learning systems; 
    • Experience in working with senior stakeholders and on the level of supporting a Group CIO/Chief Director; 
    • Experience in analysis, specification, evaluation and implementation of IT systems; 
    • A sound understanding of computer systems (hardware/software), services, networks, including cloud services; 
    • Experience in controlling an information technology budget; 
    • Excellent organisational and leadership skills; 
    • Outstanding communication abilities and interpersonal skills.
