    Vegetable Procurement Manager

    PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

    • The Vegetable Procurement Manager is responsible for the planning and execution of vegetable production and procurement of raw material to provide the appropriate volumes of raw material to the processing plant, in accordance with the Integrated Business Plan (IBP), at the appropriate time, place, cost and quality.

     

    KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:

    • Implement and manage Vegetable Supply Strategy and plans to ensure assured supply to meet demand and production requirements.
    • Implement and manage appropriate and effective short, medium and long term Vegetable Supply strategies to provide raw material at the appropriate time, quantity, cost and quality to the Processing

    Grower / Farmer Management

    • Implement a sustainable agriculture agenda, assessing on farm efficiency and cost of production, to drive and sustain continuous improvement
    • Develop and grow farmer base and farmer relationships to ensure McCain Foods remains their preferred customer;
    • Assist the McCain Extension officers with negotiation process with farmers;
    • Ensure that Vegetable crops are planted and sourced in optimal areas (climate zones), at the volume (ton) rates the factory can process.
    • Contract / source the required volumes and varieties of vegetables at the required price;
    • Do buy-outs of additional raw vegetable as required.

    Operational management of Extension officers and crop sampling staff

    • The Extension Services Function is responsible for negotiating and contracting the required volume and quality of Raw Material to meet demand and production requirements
    • Provide technical support to field officers and farmers.
    • Manage / guide field sampling staff (pea TR machine operation, beans, sweetcorn, etc.).
    • Manage / guide harvester field plans

    Sustainable Cost Advantage (SCA) Develop and implement appropriate and effective SCA strategies and operational plans to:

    • Support Improvement of crop yields and reduce costs of Growers, through advising on and implementing improved farming practices.
    • Support Agronomy to provide New and Fit for Purpose vegetable varieties, resulting in increased yields and reduced costs;
    • Reduce overhead costs without impairing the Function’s effectiveness
    • Increase field yields through best farmer selection.

    Compliance and Transformation

    • Implementation and upkeep of McCain GAP (Good Agricultural Practice) Compliance with growers
    • Ensure compliance to all regulatory requirements, relating to the contracting/procurement and production of raw material for the Processing Plant
    • Ensure the appropriate Quality Assurance policies, procedures and systems are developed, implemented and adhered to by both Independent and own Growers (HACCP, ISO and Customer Specific audits, etc.).
    • Promote and advance the compliance of McCain Foods to the appropriate Labour Legislation and BBBEE Codes

    EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

    • Matric / Grade 12
    • A Diploma/Degree in Agriculture (Crop Science)
       

    EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

    • Minimum 5 – 7 years proven agriculture procurement / extension service experience preferably in the vegetable industry.
    • Minimum 2 years management experience in the agricultural procurement / production environment.
    • Practical application of AVCASA, BASOS (FSSA) and irrigation scheduling
    • Competent in Microsoft office, (Excel, Power Point & Word) and SAP
    • Well experienced in price negotiations with growers
       

    CERTIFICATES/LICENSES:

    • Drivers’ license, AVCASA, BASOS (FSSA) , Irrigation Scheduling
    • Valid Driver’s License

    LEGAL REQUIREMENTS:

    • Valid drivers’ license
    • No criminal record

    SKILLS & ABILITIES:

    • Competent negotiator with excellent conflict handling – and networking skills
    • Good understanding of vegetable crop production & costs as well as managing challenges with these crops

    Roguing Team Leader

    PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

    • Lead the rogueing team on the fields, to ensure efficient operations and full utilization of potato crop at harvesting.

     

    KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:

    • Supervise and lead roughing team on fields.
    • Maintain a safety conscious attitude among direct reports, minimization of all workplace incidents and accidents, and accurate and timely completion of all accident investigation reports
    • Overseeing of the recording program.
    • Oversee the cutting physiological age
    • Oversee the cutting of seed for bacteria testing.
    • Record seed data on the system – Receiving Purchase Loads for MSF.
       

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • Diploma or Degree in Agriculture or Agronomy (preference will be given).
    • Ideal candidate should have at least 1 year’ experience in Agriculture.
    • Knowledge of potato planting/harvesting
    • Knowledge of Agricultural practices.
    • Knowledge of potato harvesting operations.
    • Strong computer and systems capability.
    • Ability to supervise a team.
    • Attention to detail.
    • Valid Code 08  (EB) Driver’s License.

    Technical Trainer

    PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

    • The incumbent will be responsible for facilitation and training of employees in terms of the technical, operational, food safety and safety aspects of the equipment and procedures in the McCain Delmas and Springs facilities. He/she will also be leading the training strategy, exploring new training technologies and processes as well as developing and implementing new training material and employee assessments.
    •  

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Drive operational safety and quality through operator assessments and training
    • Conduct thorough analysis of monthly Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) trends and via Pareto Analysis identify the top opportunities to improve on
    • Provide technical support to Packaging and Technical Specialist in new projects and developments
    • Develop and Implement new training material for operators and supervisors
    • Train and assess existing operators and supervisors in their understanding and execution of Best Operating Practices
    • Plan and co-ordinate Operational training based on training needs
    • Develop and execute training plans in accordance with training needs
    • Continuous auditing of operators’ adherence to Best Operating Practices
       

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • Bachelors Degree in Engineering, Food Science or relevant field of study
    • Minimum 3 - 5 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment
    • At least 2 years’ experience facilitating and leading training
    • Valid EB Drivers License
    • Good Presentation Skills
    • Excellent computer literacy (MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Visio).
    • Good knowledge of lean manufacturing concepts and processes
    • Assertive and confident

    Cost Analyst

    PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

    • The incumbent will be accountable for managing the raw material balances for the Production team and allocate the distribution of usage variances for direct cost reporting.  He/she will also be responsible for compiling the necessary reports and do an analysis to the relevant management as required.

     

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Analyse data and provide accurate reporting
    • Develop the necessary SAP financial controls and procedures
    • Reconcile agriculture potato intake with what went over the peeler, and SAP consumption daily.
    • Dissect SAP process orders affecting the direct cost report and confirm the accuracy of the data
    • Prepare capacity calculation report for SKU data analysis, including SCA calculations.
    • Provide a report for recovery and losses per SKU monthly.

    • National Diploma/Degree in Finance/Commerce

    Operations Manager

    PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

    • This role is accountable to manage the  Potato Seed Stores operation to its full capacity and to supply quality seed, at the required volume, at the planned date to Growers and ensures compliance with company policies and processes, overseeing the receiving, storage and distribution of product.  Ensure efficient space utilization in the warehouse @ 75 – 80% complying with handling and company and legislative requirements.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Manage and control seed storage as well as resources required
    • Do planning and scheduling of all incoming seed for storage
    • Allocate and schedule all seed going to growers according to the seed plan
    • Manage quality, quantity and efficiency of incoming-, reworks- and outgoing potato seed.
    • Manage costs related to seed storage
    • Assist in compiling the annual overhead budget
    • Manage the monthly overhead budget
    • Plan and co-ordinate the quarterly and annual stock take exercises.
    • Manage inbound and outbound seed allocations 
    • Compile all monthly reports                       
    • Drive engagement initiatives in the department.      
       

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • Diploma/Degree in Supply Chain/Warehouse Management/Operations Management/Agriculture
    • At least 1 years’ experience in a potato storage/agricultural pack house background preferential
    • Minimum 3-5 years warehouse management experience of which at least 2 should be in a cold room environment.
    • Minimum 2 years experience in similar operational role.
    • Strong analytical and computer skills especially in MS Excel.
    • Good written and verbal communication skills in English
    • Strong planning skills and strong management abilities
    • Demonstrated strong interpersonal, problem solving and relationship building skills
