    Freelance Video Editor

    Minimum Requirements    

    • The ideal freelancer for this role is not only a video editor, but would be someone who understands how to edit content for context and impact. They could be someone with:
    • Video editing and social media content creation experience
    • A creative individual with a background in media, art, communication photography, videography and/or technology.
    • Experienced in the use of video editing software
    • Strong attention to detail and ability to work in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines
    • Their own laptop and software
    • Competent in the/or any of the following software packages: Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Apple Final Cut Pro
    • A journalistic or communications background/experience, an understanding of journalistic principles and storytelling, and a familiarity with the research process will be advantageous.

    Duties & Responsibilities    

    • Repackage existing videos to improve engagement on the HSRC’s YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/@HumanSciencesRCSA. This includes improving the multi-media content on the HSRC’s platforms that drive the strategic messaging and mandate of the HSRC. Responsibilities include:
    • Review the provided/selected existing footage
    • Shorten, enhance and package it into a fine-tuned final product
    • Input graphics and generic clips to enhance footage
    • Improve and correct lighting, colouring and faulty footage
    • Create chapters and timestamps for longer videos
    • Create short, carefully edited clips (shorts) tailored for social media
    • Work closely with the HSRC project team to present a final product that matches their vision and strategy

    Communications and Science Journalism Specialist

    Minimum Requirements    

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Communications of similar e.g., marketing, journalism, public relations
    • Proven experience and talent in creative communication strategies and social media (B2C PR/Comms agency, corporate communications experience preferable)
    • A sound understanding of local media, African Affairs content relevant to research and development, creator market and trends
    • Strong written and oral communication skills in English and excellent interpersonal communication skills
    • Ability to handle multiple projects and positive about working in a fast-paced environment;
    • Strong interpersonal and communications skills, and the ability to co-ordinate and capacitate staff;
    • Demonstrable proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other accounting tools.  
    • Must have intellectual and personal integrity, with a well-developed work ethic and drive, and an aptitude for innovation;
    • Should be able to work under pressure, and after hours when required to meet deadlines;
    • Must be able to work proactively and independently;

    Duties & Responsibilities    

    The communications specialist we seek to appoint on a short term basis is a storyteller, reputation guard, credibility builder and information shaper. Among responsibilities for this role, a proven ability to easily distill and communicate complex issues on a short deadline. The ideal candidate has excellent media relations skills, the ability to analyze opportunities and risks associated with media inquiries, and the strategic judgment to respond accordingly. Ability to link research information & knowledge to policy informing platforms. Key projects will include Nation Building and Food Security in Africa, which will require adaptability and knowledge of current affairs.

    Responsibilities:

    • Understand the HSRC’s strategy, communications and engagement policies, and support regional implementation plan of 4 special projects in AISA
    • Develop the communication tools and plans for the said projects, plan for potential challenges,
    • Develop and execute communications messaging to critical government stakeholders,
    • Work with teams across the organisation including operations, researchers, partnerships, the executive responsible to provide strategic guidance and local insights
    • Support in preparation for media interviews, presentations, and other speaking engagements,
    • Plan, build and maintain relationships with media and influencers across different beats (dedicated to African Affairs) that will help us serve our mission and vision
