    Senior Software Developer: Extended Reality

    About the job:

    The CSIR has a vacancy for Senior Software Developer: Extended Reality (XR) in the Emerging Digital Technologies for fourth Industrial Revolution (EDT4IR) Research Centre within the Next Generation Enterprises and Institutions Cluster. The incumbent will be responsible for designing, prototyping and implementing solutions that incorporate XR components to deliver an impactful and novel solution to stakeholders and clients. This position is based in Pretoria.

    Key responsibilities:

    • Lead, conceptualise, design and implement novel XR based solutions;
    • Remain well-versed in new developments in the XR domain to identify new avenues for research and development;
    • Supervise/mentor junior staff in the area(s) of expertise;
    • Generate and contribute towards science engineering and technology (SET) activity targets and outputs (reports, guidelines, system requirements, peer-reviewed publications, technology and software packages, etc.);
    • Understand and interpret client requirements to contribute to user requirement analysis and/or well-articulated project proposals;
    • Remain current in field of expertise with respect to new approaches in tools, methods or technologies;
    • Participate in external task teams or committees in relevant domains;
    • Participate and engage in relevant XR communities to grow networks and capabilities.

    Qualifications, skills and experience:

    • A Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer/electronic engineering, information technology or related field to augmented reality with at least five years’ experience in 3-Dimensional (3D) modelling or extended reality;
    • An Honours or Master’s degree will be advantageous;
    • All international qualifications require an evaluation report / certificate issued by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA);
    • Experience in User Interface (UI) and User eXperience (UX) design concepts;
    • Experience in 3D modelling and game development using platforms and tools such as Blender, Unity, Unreal, etc, would be advantageous;
    • Experience in 3D and XR JavaScript libraries would be advantageous;
    • Demonstrated skills in analytical thinking, flexibility and adaptability, investigative thinking, teamwork, self-management, and systems level thinking;
    • Knowledge and exposure to Project Management;
    • Ability and experience to supervise/mentor/develop junior staff;
    • Expertise in developing event-driven systems.

    Senior Engineer: Geospatial Modelling

    About the job:

    • The CSIR has a vacancy for a Senior Engineer in the Operational Intelligence Impact Area, within the Next Generation Enterprises and Institutions cluster. The incumbent will be responsible for developing full stack software solutions that contribute towards analysing and presenting geospatial data for research and project implementation, including but not limited to, disaster management system development, simulation techniques and data analysis.

    Key responsibilities:

    • Lead the conceptualization and development of full stack software solutions for clients in partnership with researchers and experts from cross disciplinary fields;
    • Perform and play a leading role in geospatial modelling activities such as model preparation, simulations and analysis, method & code development as well as model validation and verification;
    • Contribute technically on large and complex projects, using cutting-edge data, simulation, technology and innovative designs;
    • Provide system architecture support through high-level system designs, and contribute to development activities that translate system designs into working systems;
    • Contribute to the technology research of the group by creating and publishing research outputs, such as scientific conference papers and journal articles in selected topics of interest
    • Perform project management tasks such as project plan scoping, managing, controlling, and closing out, including time sheet management, procurement activities, ethical clearance applications
    • Liaise with clients and respond to client instructions and requests;

    Qualifications, skills and experience:

    A Bachelor's degree in geomatics, computer science, applied mathematics, statistics, engineering or related fields with at least five years’ practical experience on the following:

    • Full-stack geospatial solution development and operations, particularly in large complex projects, working with programming browsers (like using JavaScript and React), programming servers (like using Python Django and Node), and programming databases (like using SQL, SQLite, SQLAlchemy, and MongoDB);
    • Scientific programming and implementing different machine learning and deep learning models (e.g., logistic regression, XGBoost, Random Forest, Convolutional Neural Network, Agent Based Modelling and Natural Language Processing).
    • with processing satellite observation data (e.g International Planetary Observation Processing Package (IPOPP)) would be advantageous.  

    Must have knowledge and/or experience with the following:

    • DevOps
    • Test automation, continuous integration, continuous delivery;
    • Docker
    • Python
    • JavaScript
    • C++ and other programming languages
    • Open GIS source software (e.g. Geoserver, QGIS),
    • ArcGIS Products
    • Knowledge of disaster management domain system development, simulation techniques and data analysis.
