    Principal Engineer: Control Systems

    About the job:

    The CSIR has a vacancy for a Principal Engineer: Control Systems in the Aeronautics Systems Impact Area within the Defence and Security cluster. The incumbent will be responsible to develop hardware and software solutions towards the autonomous flight of unmanned aircraft. This position is based in Pretoria.

    Key responsibilities:

    • Lead the specification, design, development, integration, and test of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) Guidance navigation and control (GNC) systems;
    • Design and develop customized systems for fully autonomous flying platforms;
    • Integrate hardware for fixed-wing and vertical take-off and landing (VTOL platforms;
    • Optimize control algorithms for robust autonomous flight;
    • Prepare and present analysis and testing results to support formal and informal design reviews;
    • Develop firmware in support of autonomous flight;

    Qualifications, skills and experience:

    A Master’s degree in robotics, mechatronics, aerospace, mechanical engineering or related fields with at least eight years’ experience in the design and development environment, of which three years’ should be in each of the following:

    • Programming using C, C++ or Matlab;
    • Object-orientated software engineering;
    • Robotics Research and Development (R&D) or a related field; 
    • A Doctoral degree in mechatronics, mechanical, aerospace engineering, robotics, or computer science will be advantageous;
    • Excellent communication, presentation, and writing skills, including the publication of technical outputs;

    Knowledge and/or experience in the following will be advantageous:

    • Good understanding of the sensors, actuators, and algorithms contributing to aerial autonomy;
    • Ability to fuse multiple sensor data and real-time control with state estimation methods (e.g. Extended Kalman Filters);

    Business Development Manager

    About the job:

    The CSIR has a vacancy for a Business Development Manager (BDM) in the Aeronautic Systems (ASYS) impact area, within the Defence and Security Cluster. The incumbent will be responsible to provide overall leadership for business development, commercialisation, stakeholder management and strategic Research and Development (R&D) programmes, to the impact area and undertake business development to secure sales as per business plan targets.     Key responsibilities:

    Business Development Leadership

    • In collaboration with the Divisional Business Development and Commercialisation Manager, Cluster Manager, Stakeholder Relations Manager and IAM, lead the business development strategy for Aeronautic Systems illustrating strategic fit to the Impact Area, Division and CSIR strategy;
    • Support the Business Development and Commercialisation Manager with national and international business development opportunities;

    Financial sustainability

    • Contribute to securing revenue for the impact area, in collaboration with Cluster Leadership, Impact Area SET Leadership as well as Business Development and Commercialisation;
    • Oversee program implementation, ensuring programs deliver impact and value to all stakeholders;
    • Program oversight in terms of schedule, deliverables, financial, risk and relationship management;
    • Anticipate, identify, and provide mitigating strategies for business/strategy/technology risks in collaboration with Operations;
    • Negotiate terms and conditions of contracts in collaboration with Cluster Manager, Impact Area Manager as well as Business Development and Commercialisation;

    • Drive overall business development KPIs for the cluster, including overall revenue, sales pipeline, relationships, and contracts secured etc.
    • Implement performance management processes within the cluster executed according to policy planning timelines;
    • Drive project management to ensure timely delivery of projects on schedule and budget;
    • Responsible for internal and external client satisfaction as per agreed targets;
    • Manage the drafting and negotiation of contracts and agreements (IP licensing, revue sharing and contract R&D, etc.) in collaboration with the Commercialisation Manager;
    • Develop a robust pipeline of business leads to ensure financial sustainability and growth.

    Relationship Management

    • Develop and facilitate national and international stakeholder network to broaden and deepen contract R&D program impact opportunity;

    Qualifications, skills and experience:

    Senior/Principal Researcher - Climatologist

    About the Job:

    The CSIR has a vacancy for a Senior/Principal Researcher: Climatologist in the Climate and Air Quality Modelling research group within the Smart Places Cluster. The incumbent will be responsible for dynamical and statistical analysis of the regional and global climate model simulations performed by the group, for both present-day and future climate, with the purpose of enhancing the understanding of African circulation dynamics. The incumbent will also be responsible for a research focus on the improvement in climate change projection systems and the downscaling of both seasonal forecasts and climate change projections, towards generating tailor-made prediction/projection products that benefit end-users. The evaluation of model forecast skill (seasonal time scale) and the reliability of projections of future climate change will be key components of the incumbent’s work. This position is based in Pretoria.

    Key responsibilities:

    • Lead the research group’s development of improved seasonal forecast and decadal-predictability systems;
    • Develop and apply dynamical and statistical downscaling procedures of seasonal forecasts and climate simulations to obtain predictands such as streamflow and crop yield;
    • Study the dynamics of Southern African inter-annual and decadal variability under present-day and future forcings;
    • Act as the interface between climate modelling specialists and application modellers within the CSIR and other institutions;
    • Lead proposal writing in the fields of climate change and climate variability in the active pursuit of CSIR contract research;

    Qualifications, skills and experience:

    • A Doctoral degree in meteorology/climatology or related field with at least five years’ experience in the analysis of four-dimensional climate model simulations and observed/reanalysis data sets;
    • Must also have at least five years’ in the calculation of climate statistics and statistical model verification;
    •  Knowledge of clustering techniques based on methods such as Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Self-Organising Maps (SOMs) will be a particular advantage;
    • Experience in the use of process-based models and statistical approaches for regional downscaling of climate simulations and seasonal forecasts to predictands such as crop yield and streamflow;
    • Experience in scientific programming (preferably Fortran, C, Python or R) and data manipulation and visualisation (e.g. in GrADS and GIS environments);

    • Situational awareness system and operational command centre development;

    Senior System Administrator

    About the job:

    The CSIR has two vacancies for Senior System Administrators in the ICT Services Portfolio.     Internship: Bioprocessing

    About the job:

    The CSIR has an Internship opportunity in the Bioprocess Development research team, within the Chemicals Cluster. The purpose of these Internship is to provide graduates with an opportunity to gain practical work experience through research and development of competitive technologies and innovative products under the guidance of researchers and engineers within cross-functional teams. These positions are based in Pretoria.

    Key responsibilities:

    Under supervision, the Intern will be required to:

    • Analyse and interpret experimental results;
    • Prepare technical reports;
    • Operate bioreactor preparation (10L to 1000L), monitoring and sampling;
    • Contribute to the planning of experiments and execute planned experiments;
    • Contribute to the development and implementation of standard operating procedures;
    • Contribute and assist with laboratory inventory management;
    • Take responsibility and custodianship of the laboratory;
    • Prepare chemical and biological agents;
    • Conduct routine general microbiology including enumeration of cells and streak/spread plating;

    Qualifications, skills and experience:

    • An Honours in biotechnology, microbiology or chemical engineering.
    • Computer literacy in MS Office Package;
    • Must be able and willing to work shifts (morning, afternoon or night)
    • Must have a ‘hands on’ approach with respect to equipment operation, and working in the laboratory and pilot facility;
    • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written);

    • Willingness to learn and work under pressure;

    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
