    Lecturer/Researcher (2-Year Contract) (Job ID: 5851)

    Duties and responsibilities: 

    • Oversee the various aspects of a collaborative research project on signed toponomy (Survey of South African Sign Language Place Names, part of Advancing South African Sign Language (SASL) for 4IR Technological Development Using Place Names), including developing an overarching research strategy, growing human capacity, managing the team’s research and other outputs, collaborating with stakeholders, and assisting with the administration of the project.
    • Assist in procuring funding for scholarly activities (conferences, research projects, etc.).
    • Organise departmental conferences, seminars, workshops, and other academic events.
    • Manage departmental research publications, including the proceedings of the department’s biennial conferences – International Symposium on Place Names and the Language Diversity in Educational Settings Workshop.
    • Supervise postgraduate students, lecture/guest lecture in relevant modules and conduct workshops and other educational activities as required.
    • Present papers at academic conferences and other academic events and produce related research outputs.
    • Participate in community engagement initiatives where possible.
    • Contribute to the development of the niche research areas of toponymy and signed toponymy.
    • Cultivate awareness and appreciation of South African Deaf culture.

    Inherent requirements:

    Lecturer/Researcher 

    • A PhD on NQF Level 10 in Linguistics or a related field.
    • A minimum of two (2) years’ relevant experience in managing research projects.
    • Proven experience in organising conferences and other scholarly events.
    • Proven editorial experience.
    • Proven experience in the delivery of poster or oral presentations at conferences or equivalent activities.
    • Evidence of manuscripts produced that have the potential to be converted or submitted for publication in accredited journals.
    • A good academic record.

    Recommendations:

    • Proficiency in South Africa Sign Language (SASL) or willingness to acquire the language.
    • Member of a national or international scholarly society or committee.

    Senior Officer: Gauteng Regional Marketer (Post Level 9) (Job ID: 5822)

    Duties and responsibilities:

    • Develop, maintain, and implement the Directorate’s Recruitment Plan.
    • Visit identified schools and career exhibitions. 
    • Enhance existing relationships and develop new ones with schools. 
    • Engage with Faculties to influence admission decisions. 
    • Identify and recruit top achievers for all faculties.
    • Identify top achievers for the SRS Top Achiever programmes (Matriculant of the Year, Star of Stars, Red Box Society, etc.) and for the fields of sport, culture, and leadership.

    • Manage and organise marketing projects as per the Directorate’s strategy.

    Senior Lecturer (Nematology-Invertebrate Zoology) (Job ID: 5852)

    Duties and responsibilities:

    • Develop and implement strategies for biological control of planet parasitic nematodes, with an emphasis on agricultural and horticultural systems.
    • Interact with the public regarding Nematology, Invertebrate Zoology, and related queries.
    • Obtain external funding (3rd stream income).
    • Supervise research undertaken by postgraduate (MSc and PhD) students.
    • Responsible for teaching and learning in undergraduate and postgraduate (B.Sc. Honours) programmes in Zoology. This includes lectures, tutorials, practical classes (preparation and presentation), assessments and seminars.
    • Manage administrative tasks and academic planning (curriculum development etc.) in the department and where applicable at university level.

    Inherent requirements:

    Senior Lecturer

    • PhD on NQF Level 10 in Zoology/Biology/Environmental Science (Invertebrate Zoology focusing on Nematology).
    • Proven laboratory experience (qPCR, NGS, phylogenetic analysis), experimental design and management of a potential diagnostic lab.
    • Proven research record of relevant publications in national and international accredited journals (at least 5-10), including representative publications as lead author.
    • Proven experience in presenting papers/posters at national and international scholarly conferences.
    • Proven experience of service as an active member of a national or international scholarly society, committee, or agency concerned with research at higher education levels.
    • Proven undergraduate teaching experience at a higher education institution.
    • Proven experience in the supervision of graduated master’s students.
    • An NRF rating or demonstrated potential for obtaining an NRF rating or equivalent.

    Recommendations:

    • Research expertise in taxonomy, systems, ecology, and phylogenetic analysis, specifically in the discipline of Nematology (plant-parasitic or free-living nematodes), will be advantageous.
    • Proven experience with interacting and collaborating with industry.
    • The successful candidate will be expected to expand the Department’s research activities, with a focus in Nematology.
