    Health and Safety Officer - Germiston

    Job Advert Summary    

    • The successful candidate would be required to coordinate the health and safety systems within the business unit. The candidate would have to identify hazards, assess risks to health and safety, put appropriate safety controls in place, and provide advice on accident prevention and occupational health to management and employees.

    Minimum Requirements    

    • Diploma /Degree in Health and Safety management
    • SAMTRAC certificate would be advantageous
    • Minimum of 5 Years Occupational Health and Safety Experience
    • Experience in working with: OHS Act 85 of 1993, COID Act, National Environmental Management Act.
    • Previous experience in a poultry environment/operation will be beneficial
    • Drivers’ license & own transport required.
    • Must be computer literate on MS Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and MS Word.

    Duties and Responsibilities    

    • Reporting of Sec. 24 and Sec. 25 incidents/accidents to the Department of Labour and COID
    • Reporting findings and Statistics to management
    • Conducting meetings and presenting Training on procedures and Induction
    • Facilitate the IOD process and assist with the rehabilitation of workers after accidents or injuries
    • Facilitate the investigation on any incident or accident; verify the implementation corrective measures.
    • Qualification and Experience in Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment analysis and monitoring Safe Job Analysis.
    • Overseeing and enforcing Lock Out, Confined Space and Safe Work Procedures as required on site.
    • Managing and monitoring visitors and project contractors to ensure they are compliant.
    • Conduct internal compliance and Health & Safety Audits.
    • Contractor Compliance including induction, 37(2) Mandatory agreements and COID registration Control.
    • Schedule and maintain all training that expire or of any training that is required.
    • Ensure that annual, quarterly, monthly checklist and inspections are completed and signed off by relevant party that carried out the inspections
    • Inform management of any Health, Safety or Environment issues that may cause damage, injury, safety or health related problems

    Minimum Requirements    

    • Good stockmanship
    • A thorough understanding of flaws and strategies to improve
    • A good understanding of modern farming methods, a commitment to animal welfare and an interest in, and understanding of, the ways in which farming impacts the environment
    • Experience leading projects with minimal assistance, within framework and to budget.
    • IT skills are essential alongside the capability to analyze operational reports, monitoring compliance with policies and procedures.
    • Managerial Experience with a background of coaching and developing high performing people, with the aim to outperform
    • A valid drivers’ license
    • Minimum of 5 years’ experience within the area of Rearing

    Duties and Responsibilities    

    • Ensure all the flocks in rearing reach KPI’s in a cost effective manner
    • Ensure weight and feed profiles are followed as prescribed
    • Ensure vaccination and grading programmes are followed and employees are trained in these activities
    • Ensure all livestock is treated humanely, and in compliance with company standards
    • Coaching employees to help them develop a clear understanding of the requirements relating to Animal Welfare, Food Safety and Quality
    • Involve the team by encouragement and motivating to deliver safety excellence and promote risk awareness by getting involved and following safety rules and identifying risks
    • Drive improvement in the performance standards for uniformity of the flock, point of lay cost (POLC), health and animal welfare (up to 21 weeks)
    • Conduct post mortems and report finding to senior area ops manager and group veterinarian
    • Record and monitor weekly husbandry parameters
    • Coach and develop your team to ensure they have the capability to meet the performance goals
    • Reduce turnover and ensure labour cost base is the most productive, efficient and cost competitive for the industry
    • Manage, monitor and keep within budget, seeking approval for out of scope spend
    • Attending to HR/IR matters (i.e. planning leave, time sheets, disciplinary measures)
