    Data Collectors

    Job Advert Summary    
    The CCBR seeks to appoint suitably qualified persons as a Data Collector for a research study implemented in KwaZulu Natal. The successful candidate will collect data at primary health care clinics and from individuals who receive their health services at the selected clinics. This will require completion of survey instruments in the clinic, the identification, tracking and contact of clinic users, completion of survey instruments with the clinic users at their preferred venue or location. Data collection is planned for the following areas in KwaZulu Natal:

    • Clinic 1: Caluza Clinic, Msunduzi  Local Municipality, Umgungundlovu District, KwaZulu-Natal
    • Clinic 2: Northdale Clinic, Msunduzi Local Municipality, Umgungundlovu District, KwaZulu-Natal
    • Clinic 3: Injabulo Clinic, Mkhambathini Local Municipality, Umgungundlovu District, KwaZulu-Natal
    • Clinic 4: Prince Zulu CDC, eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality, eThekwini Metropolitan, KwaZulu-Natal
    • Clinic 5: Ballito Clinic, KwaDukuza Local Municipality, iLembe District, KwaZulu-Natal
    • Clinic 6: Scottburgh Clinic, Umdoni Local Municipality, Ugu District, KwaZulu-Natal
    • The Data Collector will report to a designated team leader and work closely with the research study team and other site support staff to successfully implement this function. There are eighteen (18) positions offered on a 3-month short term contract.

    Minimum Requirements    
    Minimum requirements:

    • 3-year tertiary qualification or Grade 12 with relevant work experience in a similar role
    • Minimum 1-year research or data collection experience
    • Minimum 1-year Experience collecting Dried Blood Spots (DBS)
    • HIV testing and counselling certificate
    • Minimum 1-year Experience of HIV testing and counselling
    • Familiarity with the functioning of a smartphone and tablet
    • Experience in either clinical, observational, intervention research
    • Fluency in talking and reading isiZulu and English and writing in English
    • Driver’s License
    • Currently an active driver
    • Able and willing to drive a variety of different sized vehicles.
    • Willingness to work after hours and over weekends and in rural/urban communities
    • Attention to detail
    • Demonstrated computer literacy
    • Good interpersonal, organisational and problem-solving skills
    • Ability to adhere to strict deadlines
    • Relevant knowledge of HIV/AIDS

    Preference will be given to applicants with:

    • REDCap experience
    • GCP certification
    • Experience working in PHC/CHC clinics
    • 3-year tertiary qualification in a relevant field
    • Technologically savvy
    • Recent Experience collecting Dried Blood Spots (DBS)
    • Recent Experience performing HIV testing and counselling
    • Clinical research and trial(s) experience
    • Sound written and verbal communication skills
    • Commitment to working as part of a multi-disciplinary research team
    • The ability to work accurately, independently and in a team
    • Good interpersonal, organisational, administrative and problem-solving skills

    Duties & Responsibilities    
    Key Responsibilities:

    • Consenting participants
    • Assisting the team leader and study coordinator in achieving all stipulated QA/QC targets
    • Tracking and tracing selected patients for study activities
    • Able to read patient clinic charts and perform data abstraction
    • Conduct and capture surveys on REDCap
    • Able to perform telephone calls to participants to collect, verify, update and capture, new or existing patient information
    • Compile a list of all participants to be scheduled for appointments
    • Report any problems to study coordinator/team leader the same day of identification
    • Attend to QC reports/issues and follow up on & resolve missing data and conflicting data issues
    • Participate in the development and refinement of the data collection process
    • Performing a finger prick for the collection of Dried Blood Spots (DBS)
    • Ensuring bio-hazardous waste is disposed of according to waste management guidelines
    • Maintaining regular documentation and records of all daily activities
    • Developing and maintaining good working relationships with local community stakeholders
    • Updating logs
    • Working with the community programmes and stakeholder relations unit to conduct community preparation and mobilisation activities
    • Ensuring accurate record keeping of participant information
    • Facilitating participant reimbursement to eligible participants
    • Extracting information from clinic files

    Key Requirements:
    The candidates are expected to have the following qualifications, skills, and competencies:

    • A minimum of a Master’s qualification in Education, Sociology, Economics, Social Sciences, Development Studies (or related discipline);
    • A track record of extensive experience with qualitative and/or quantitative research methods.
    • Knowledge and understanding of the employment, education, skills development, and training sector; sustainable livelihoods, gender, youth and disability studies.
    • Evidence of extensive writing experience, preferably with writing exposure to scientific publications.
    • Experience with undertaking literature reviews and evidence synthesis.
    • Good writing skills for drafting briefing papers, reports, academic publications and for wider public dissemination of research findings.
    • Willingness to undertake interviews and conduct roundtables and workshops.
    • Experience with creative presentation of data using contemporary methods including infographics, for data dissemination to non-technical audiences (infographics, fact sheets etc).
    • Proven experience with undertaking peer reviews.
    • Experience with quantitative data analysis using STATA.
    • Experience with qualitative data analysis using Atlas ti.
    • Computer skills and proficiency in appropriate software for writing, referencing, and editing would be advantageous.
    • Temperament to cope with a pressurised, deadline driven work environment.
    • High personal motivation, self-management, and detail-orientation.
    • Previous work experience with HSRC will be an added advantage.

    Duties & Responsibilities    
    The scope of work and expectations of the Freelance Sector Experts will include the following:

    • Undertake research assignments as outlined in the scope of work including conducting high quality literature reviews, secondary data analysis; primary data collection and analysis, producing fact sheets and infographic summaries of evidence and peer reviewing of reports.
    • Read and become familiar with the project report and any other relevant documents which are intended to be submitted as public records to the client.
    • Participate in briefing sessions to understand the scope of work.
    • Work in collaboration with the team to understand and frame the research questions/needs, and quickly develop a research plan to address research goals and hypotheses. Indicate the timelines and the deliverables.
    • Provide a workplan outlining understanding of the scope of work, approach to be adopted and timelines for delivery of main and sub deliverables.
    • Assist with data organization, analysis, and synthesis, as well as with developing research reports.

    • The HSRC seeks to make an appointment within the Supply Chain Management (SCM) Unit. SCM is a regulated function in terms of the PFMA. The Supply Chain Management team provides professional services to the HSRC. Its work processes and policies have been streamlined and simplified to deliver user oriented, value-adding services.     Minimum Requirements
