    Director: Academic Administration (Office of the Registrar)

    The Director

    • Leads the student records office, the examinations office, and the doctoral degrees board office in their respective functions.
    • Liaises with the deputy vice-chancellors, deans, deputy deans, heads of academic departments, chairpersons of relevant committees and members of the academic staff in order to provide guidance regarding academic administration policy and practice as required.
    • Provides detailed direction, through a dotted-line relationship with faculty managers, to the faculty offices and the Graduate School of Business regarding the academic administration work undertaken in these offices.
    • Develops standardised administrative processes and systems that contribute towards a positive experience for students.
    • Collaborates with internal stakeholders in multiple operational areas that intersect with the academic administration. These include student admissions, student housing, fees and financial aid, student system support, legal services, the international academic programmes office and institutional planning.
    • Builds and maintains positive professional and interpersonal relations with colleagues  at different levels  and across multiple functional areas within the university.

    Requirements for the position:

    • Master’s degree (NQF level 9).
    • 10 years’ relevant experience within a university, of which 5 years have been in a senior management capacity.
    • A proven understanding of the national higher education landscape in South Africa.
    • Proven experience in the translation and implementation of legislative frameworks that apply to higher education, as well as experience in internal institutional governance processes. This includes the interpretation of legislation, policies and associated guidelines.
    • Knowledge of the academic administration systems within a higher education institution, including the associated governance and implementation frameworks.
    • A proven track record of managing change in a transforming organisation.
    • Excellent planning, organisational and prioritisation skills.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Line management of staff and teams.

    Advantageous:

    • Experience with the implementation of administrative systems to support operational processes for student-centered service provision and communication.

    Responsibilities:

    • Develop, integrate and implement business processes needed for academic administration, to give effect to Senate policy and institutional strategic priorities, ensuring coherence, consistency and accuracy.
    • Ensure coherence and consistency in processes across faculty academic administration to ensure accuracy of the student record in all faculties.
    • Develop and implement controls and protocols to ensure the integrity of graduation and certification processes, and the integrity of student data.
    • Facilitate system enhancements that will enable the automation of the business processes in academic administration.
    • Contribute to institutional responses in commenting on national policy drafts and guidelines as appropriate.
    • Fulfil full-service functions required for university examinations, including examination timetables and related arrangements.
    • Direct the annual planning, scheduling, and preparation of graduation ceremonies.
    • Manage the performance and development of staff.
    • Develop and implement an annual budget.
    • Develop reports and conduct committee functions.

    Senior Lecturer, Health Policy and Systems

    Requirements:

    • A PhD or doctoral level equivalent in Public Health or Social Sciences (including Organisational, Policy or Development Studies)
    • At least 3 years independent, post-graduate education experience, including experience of support for leadership development training and of student supervision and mentoring
    • At least 3 years of research experience relevant to health policy and systems research in South Africa or other low- and middle-income country
    • Demonstrated understanding of a ‘systems lens’ and its application in health-related education or research
    • Evidence of a track record of peer-reviewed publications
    • Demonstrated ability to work in teaching and research teams, including interpersonal skills
    • Proven ability to work on multiple activities at one time and meet deadlines while producing high quality work
    • Strong conceptual and analytical skills

    Responsibilities:

    • Support for organisational and educational activities within the post graduate Diploma in Health Leadership, including student support
    • Support for initiating, implementing and evaluating workplace-based leadership development models, in collaboration with health system and other partners
    • Supporting curriculum development for a new MPH course in health leadership, and convening this course once approved
    • Supporting other MPH courses within the Health Systems track
    • Supporting the development of a programme of research and evaluation around health system leadership within the Divisional portfolio, including proposal writing and budget management
    • Supervision of Masters students’ minor dissertation projects
    • PhD co-supervision
    • Working collaboratively with other staff within the Health Policy and Systems Division
    • Wider collaboration within the School of Public Health, the Faculty of Health Sciences, and University more generally, around health system leadership and other Health Policy and Systems issues
    • Collaboration with a range of health system actors as relevant to the HPS Division’s broader educational and research programmes of research work
    • Engagement and collaboration with national and international research partners

    Director: Research Animal Facility

    Requirements for Veterinarian/Scientist/Para-Veterinarian:

    • Leadership experience, with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in the management and/or supervision of persons or groups of people
    • Minimum of 3 years’ experience working in a research animal facility or performing research involving animals
    • Experience in managing budgets and preparing business plans
    • Experience conducting scientific research
    • Experience in authoring scientific publications
    • Experience in curriculum development, presenting training courses, lectures and practical demonstrations
    • Up-to-date knowledge of the regulatory and ethical requirements for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes
    • Understanding of the operations and core functions of a university environment
    • Knowledge of biocontainment, working with infectious substances, health and safety in animal research
    • Computer skills (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, professional email, and efficient internet use)
    • High level of numeracy
    • Demonstrate personal integrity, honesty, ethical nature, respect for animals as sentient beings
    • Ability to multi-task, work under pressure, and assume high level of responsibility
    • Excellent interpersonal skills, clear verbal and written communication skills, successful teamwork, effective line management, conflict resolution

    Advantages for Veterinarian/Scientist/Para-Veterinarian:

    • Demonstrated ability to successfully attract funding by grant applications and presentation of educational courses
    • Experience working under specified pathogen-free or biocontainment (biosafety) conditions
    • Experience in managing a research animal facility
    • Experience serving as member of an institutional animal research ethics committee
    • Experience in quality management systems and quality-assurance systems
    • Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA)

    Specific requirements for a Veterinarian:

    • Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc or equivalent)
    • Registered, or eligible to register, with the South African Veterinary Council
    • Willingness to assume regular and emergency veterinary duties within the various UCT RAF core and satellite facilities

    Specific advantages for a Veterinarian:

    • Postgraduate diploma or degree in one of the Biological Sciences
    • Experience in clinical practice as a veterinarian or veterinary specialist
    • Experience in a broad range of veterinary procedures in a variety of animal species

    Specific requirements for a Scientist/Para-Veterinarian:

    • Master’s degree in the Biological Sciences

    Specific advantages for a Scientist/Para-Veterinarian:

    • PhD degree in one of the Biological Sciences
    • Authorisation, or eligible to be authorised, by the South African Veterinary Council

    Responsibilities:

    • Leadership of the UCT RAF, including ensuring the sustainability of animal research and maintenance of appropriate standards and regulatory compliance related to the care and use of animals, as well as attention to the wellbeing of all staff within the UCT RAF
    • UCT-RAF business model and its financial stability, including active fundraising endeavors
    • Oversee the SAVC-registration of all FHS animal facilities, including the UCT RAF core facilities and Departmental satellite facilities
    • Leading the development and appropriate provision of education and training in Laboratory Animal Science

    Senior Lecturer / Lecturer (EGS) Science

    Requirements at Lecturer Level:

    • A PhD in climate science, ideally related to climate modeling and/or climate impact modeling
    • Ability to teach at tertiary level
    • Ability to supervise postgraduate students
    • A demonstrable academic research track record as evidenced by accredited academic journal publications

    Requirements at Senior Lecturer Level:

    Data Quality and Analytics Specialist

    Requirements for the job:

    • Basic degree/diploma in computer science/information technology/data science or related field.
    • Demonstrated skill set of any programming/scripting language/software for data cleaning.
    • In-depth knowledge of database design and development using REDCap.
    • At least five years’ experience, with two years of this experience specifically in data and data quality management.
    • At least two years’ experience working in the health or biomedical or research sectors.
    • Fluency in English.

    The following will be advantageous:

    • Knowledge of basic biostatistics or basic epidemiology.
    • Knowledge of database design and development using other systems relational database management systems including Microsoft SQL Server and/or Microsoft Access.
    • SOP and data management plans development.
    • Management/supervisory experience overseeing data entry staff.
    • Current or previous Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training.
    • Hold a valid driver’s license for at least 1 year.

    Responsibilities:

    • Manage the internal Data Management Hub of the RePORT South Africa Network.
    • Provide data management support for other SATVI studies.
    • Design, develop and implement databases.
    • Implementing changes to the research database.
    • Extraction and preliminary analysis of the data.
    • Database training of research teams both internal and external to UCT.
    • End-user account management and database security.

    Data quality management which includes but not limited to;

    • all day-to-day operational data management activities, including maintaining integrity of the data.
    • coordination and resolution of data queries.
    • ensuring that accurate, valid data are entered within stipulated data entry timelines.
    • ensuring that visits are tracked for each participant.
    • ensuring that samples collected are linked to participant identifiers and tracked.
    •  Attend SATVI academic and operational meetings.
