    Lecturer: School of Health Systems and Public Health: Faculty of Health Sciences - 25022

    Responsibilities
    The incumbent will be responsible for the following:

    • Teaching Biostatistics and Epidemiology undergraduate and postgraduate modules for the Division of Health Measurement Sciences;
    • Research supervision of BSc Honours/MSc/MPH students in Epidemiology & Biostatistics, Public Health, or Health Systems in the SHSPH;
    • Provide bio-statistical consultations involving sample size calculation, sampling strategy, data collection and management, and statistical data analysis;
    • Formulating Biostatistician letters to accompany protocols submitted for ethics clearance;
    • Publish in Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) approved journals;
    • Apply for research grants;
    • Updating course content and revising study guides;
    • Maintaining the electronic learning environment;
    • Strengthening Health Measurement Sciences research within the SHSPH as well as collaborative research within the Faculty and the University;
    • Developing partnerships with local and international biostatisticians, epidemiologists, and public health specialists for research development;
    • Participating in the SHSPH’s strategic initiatives relating to teaching, learning and community engagement;
    • Performing other academic and research duties as may be delegated by the Line Manager and/or the Head of School;

    Minimum Requirements

    • MSc in Statistics or Biostatistics or Applied Statistics or Epidemiology and Biostatistics or equivalent field;
    • Minimum 2 accredited publications (ideally more, preferably in last 3 years and in ISI journals);
    • At least 1 year’s teaching experience including tutoring.

    Required Competencies (skills, Knowledge And Behavioural Attributes)

    • Use of statistical software (Stata, R, SAS, SPSS, etc);
    • Good interpersonal and mentoring skills;
    • Systematic reviews and meta-analysis skills;
    • Scientific writing skills.

    Added Advantages And Preferences

    • Currently enrolled or completed a doctoral degree;
    • Current NRF-rating;
    • Experience in Monitoring & Evaluation practice and/or teaching;
    • Some first author publications are recommended;
    • Biostatistics consultation experience;
    • Excellent teaching record as evidenced by student, peer or learning expert evaluations;
    • International experience and exposure.

    First Animal Caretaker (Equine Clinic) - Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital - 25030

    Responsibilities
    The incumbent will be responsible for performing then duties expected of an equine animal caretaker (also known as stable hand or groom in the equine industry):

    • Cleaning (remove manure and bedding, scrubbing and washing) and disinfecting of stables and surrounding areas;
    • Grooming (brushing and cleaning of feet) and caring for horses;
    • Handling and holding horses during veterinary examinations and treatment;
    • Prepare horses for and assist by handling and/or holding horses during special procedures e.g. radiography, anaesthesia, laparoscopy;
    • Flexibility to assist with cleaning in other sections in the OVAH when required;
    • Performing shift/weekend duties.

    Minimum Requirements

    • Grade 12- and 1-year current or recent (within the past three years) experience in handling of horses

    Required Competencies (skills, Knowledge And Behavioural Attributes)

    • Knowledge of horses and horsemanship, including handling of horses;
    • Knowledge of stable hygiene and some knowledge of detergents and disinfectants;
    • Meticulous about detail, professional and a responsible person;
    • Appropriate language and communication skills;
    • Organizing skills and a strong service orientation;
    • Physical mobility;
    • Ability to work under pressure and without supervision;
    • Computer literacy;
    • Ability to work weekends and outside normal working hours when required for continuous service delivery in the hospital;
    • Willingness to perform shift duties.

    Added Advantages And Preferences

    • Short course certificate in Horse Sense and Horsemanship;
    • Experience in working with horses at a veterinary practice or hospital.
