    Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital: First Veterinary Nurse (OVAH Night Shift) - 25017

    Responsibilities
    The incumbent will be responsible for:

    • Performing excellent patient care and handling;
    • Clinic management (record keeping, hygiene, stock control, care of equipment, safety measures etc.);
    • Supervising support staff;
    • Administering and monitoring of anaesthesia and sedation;
    • Performing emergency procedures;
    • Communicating with patient owners;
    • Demonstrating techniques to and instructing students and student nurses;
    • Rendering after-hours, shift and weekend veterinary nursing service at the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital, ICU and Outpatient Clinic in accordance with the duty roster, set up in the following shifts:

    Minimum Requirements

    • Diploma in Veterinary Nursing (DipCurAnim or Dip Vet Nursing); or BVetNurse or equivalent qualification;
    • Registered as Veterinary Nurse with the South African Veterinary Council;
    • Two years’ experience in veterinary nursing

    Required Competencies (skills, Knowledge And Behavioural Attributes)

    • Knowledge of small animal nursing procedures, biosecurity measures and procedures and handling of all types of small animals;
    • Meticulous about detail, professional and a responsible person;
    • Appropriate language and communication skills;
    • Organizing skills and a strong service orientation;
    • Physical mobility;
    • Ability to work under pressure and without supervision;
    • Computer literacy;
    • Ability to work weekends and outside normal working hours when required for continues service delivery in the hospital.

    Added Advantages And Preferences

    • Previous and/or current experience of one year or more in a high-pressure veterinary emergency clinic enviroment where patients are triaged and multiple emergency procedures take place simultaneously, will be an advantage.
    • Appropriate experience in ICU

    Lecturer/Senior Lecturer: Anaesthesiology, Department of Companion Animal Clinical Studies, Faculty of Veterinary Science, post 224... - 25020

    Responsibilities
    The successful candidate will actively participate in the following areas:

    • Teaching and practical training of undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary and veterinary nursing students in Veterinary Anaesthesiology;
    • Clinical service in the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital, surrounding community and satellite clinics, including participation in a 24-hour service;
    • Postgraduate training and supervision where appropriate;
    • Research and publication in scientific journals;
    • Networking with relevant industry stakeholders;
    • Community engagement;
    • Administrative and other duties as delegated by the Head of Department; and
    • Academic self-development.

    Minimum Requirements
    Lecturer:

    • A BVSc- or BVMCh degree or an equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
    • A Masters or equivalent postgraduate degree in Anaesthesiology at the time of appointment or registered for an MMedVet degree in Anaesthesiology to be completed within a reasonable time of appointment;
    • Registration with the SAVC at the time of appointment or eligibility for registration within a reasonable period;
    • Demonstrable a strong interest in research and potential to become an established specialist researcher;
    • Evidence of continued professional development or continued education development;
    • Participation in extracurricular academic activities or events; and
    • Commitment to develop a teaching and learning portfolio.

    Senior Lecturer

    • A BVSc- or BVMCh degree or an equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
    • A MMedVet degree in Anaesthesiology and/or equivalent specialty board certification;
    • Registration with the SAVC as a specialist in Anaesthesiology or eligibility for registration within a reasonable period;
    • At least two peer reviewed research papers in ISI accredited scientific journals as first author; and
    • Four years veterinary experience with three years’ experience in predominantly Anaesthesiology.

    Required Competencies (skills, Knowledge And Behavioural Attributes)

    • Proven knowledge and competence in Veterinary Anaesthesiology;
    • Research interest appropriate to the position;
    • Commitment to develop a teaching and learning portfolio required at the relevant teaching level.
    • Where applicable, commitment to obtain a PhD in reasonable time (senior lecturer & associate professor);
    • Good language and communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills; and
    • Generic teaching competence including proficiency with presentation, word-processing and spreadsheet software.

    • Experience with relevant specialised procedures and techniques in Veterinary Anaesthesiology;
    • Tertiary teaching and mentoring experience; and
    • Exposure to research in an appropriate field.

    • Registered as Veterinary Nurse with the South African Veterinary Council;
    • Two years’ experience in veterinary nursing and clinic management.

    Associate Professor in Epidemiology: School of Health Systems and Public Health - Faculty of Health Sciences - 24996

    Responsibilities

    • Teaching Epidemiology undergraduate and postgraduate modules for the Division of Health Measurement Sciences, SHSPH;
    • Supervision of PhD/MSc/MPH/BSc Honours students in the fields of Epidemiology or Public Health or Health Systems in the SHSPH;
    • Publish in Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) approved journals;
    • Apply and secure research grants for national and international projects;
    • Updating course content and revising study guides for modules related to epidemiology;
    • Developing and/or maintaining the electronic learning environment;
    • Strengthening Health Measurement Sciences research within the SHSPH and its affiliated research centres and institutes, as well as collaborative transdisciplinary research with other disciplines within the Faculty and the University;
    • Developing partnerships with local and international epidemiologists, biostatisticians and public health specialists for innovative research programme development;
    • Participating in the SHSPH’s strategic initiatives relating to teaching, learning and community engagement;
    • Performing other academic and research duties as may be delegated by the Line Manager and/or the Head of School

    Minimum Requirements

    • A PhD degree in Epidemiology ;
    • 18 accredited publications (at least some recent and at least 50% in ISI journals);
    • Evidence of Master’s & PhD supervised (at least 4 Masters completed and evidence of current doctoral supervision);
    • Conference papers presented internationally;
    • NRF rating is preferred or evidence of being an established researcher;
    • Membership of international bodies;
    • 5 years’ teaching experience.
    • Course/block coordinator or equivalent;
    • Some curriculum development/ innovation;
    • Teaching portfolio compliant with UP criteria;
    • Community engagement recommended;
