    Assistant Accountant (Fixed Term Contract)

    Job Description

    • As the Assistant Accountant you will reconcile ledger balance sheet accounts, ensuring the accuracy and completeness of all recons.

    More of your responsibilities will include:

    • Accurate preparation of general accounting, payroll, cost and accrual journals and the reallocation of incorrect postings
    • Supporting the accurate preparations and submission of Minerals Council of SA and DMRE
    • Assisting the Accountant with month-end reporting, ensuring the cost completeness is in line with requirements
    • Assisting the Accountant with forecasting and budgeting processes
    • Preparations of reconciliations
    • Populating the Cost Performance Management template and supporting the process of cost reviews
    • Managing relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, understand and deliver on their operational needs, and identify and resolve issues timeously

    Qualifications

    • Diploma/ Degree in Accounting or Financial discipline (NQF 6/7)

    Experience & Knowledge

    • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in Finance environment
    • SAP experience is essential

    Rock Engineering Specialist - Various Locations

    Job Description

    • We are looking for an innovative dedicated Rock Engineer who will oversee and perform design layouts and support systems for the Coal Operation Safely. You will ensure adherence to the organisational best practice and legislative requirement.
    • You will ensure proper Rock Engineering input into the design and support, while making sure you understand the service requirements related to the Operational Strat control process.
    • Analyse and interpret rock engineering data and information to identify changes in the production environment, defects, and safety risks, while conducting regular inspections and ensure problems are addressed proactively and aligned with Rock Engineering requirements
    • Develop quality controls to ensure alignment of operational rock engineering interventions, systems and processes with standardization requirements as well as policies, procedures and operating standards
    • As a Rock Engineer you will maintain stakeholder relationships, successful teamwork and manage the continuous improvement of the Rock Engineering function.

    This role is in the mining department at Band 6 and reports to the Technical Services Manager and Principal Rock Engineer.

    Qualifications

    • BSC Degree / Graduate Diploma in Mining Engineering or a related Science field (NQF 7/8)
    • Rock Mechanics Certificate

    Required Experience

    • Minimum 5 years’ experience in Rock Engineering in the Mining Industry.
    • The role is appointed in terms of section 14.1.8 of the Mine Health and Safety Act.
    • Registered as a Rock Engineer with SANIRE
    • Chamber of Mines Certificate in Strata Control
    • Computer Literacy (MS Office and relevant Rock Engineering Packages)

    Section Engineer UG

    Job Description

    • As a 2.13.3.1 legal appointee in terms of the Mine Health and Safety Act (South Africa), the Section Engineer will be required to apply his/her sound knowledge of engineering standards and principles to ensure the effective engineering and asset management of the section.

    Your key responsibilities will include: 

    • Consistently apply the Thungela Resources Safety Principles in all team interactions and take personal responsibility for safety of self and others to ensure zero harm and elimination of fatalities and Loss Time Injuries in accordance with Thungela Resources Standards, and Mine Health and Safety Act, and other applicable legislation.
    • Managerial authority to ensure that legal requirements, codes of practices, group standards, procedures and policies are updated, implemented, adhered to and that changes to legal requirements are communicated.
    • Managerial and advisory authority to optimize planned maintenance in support of production targets through providing technical expertise to the mining operation teams and coordinate planned maintenance and major overhauls / shutdowns and investigating, monitoring, and eliminating causes of breakdowns.
    • Managerial and advisory authority in effective people management, ensuring that roles are well defined and clarified and that competencies and learning paths are developed to human capacity and capability.
    • Managerial and monitoring authority in effective project management of engineering projects and Asset Optimization initiatives ensuring best practice research and knowledge sharing.
    • Managerial authority in Financial Budgeting & Management.
    • Managerial authority to effectively manage contractors and supplier relationships ensuring compliance to Thungela Resources standards.

    This role forms part of the Engineering Department at a Band 6 level reporting to the Engineering Manager, with multiple section reports.

    Qualifications

    • BSc/BEng/BTech/National Diploma in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
    • Government Certificate of Competence for Mines & Works (GCC).
    • Completed or in the process of completing a postgraduate qualification would be advantageous.
    • Registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA)
    • Management Development Programme or equivalent.

    Experience and Knowledge:

    • Minimum 5 years' experience as Underground Engineer
    • Good Knowledge of Equipment capabilities and practices
    • Knowledge of technical engineering aspects such as original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and South Africa Bureau of Standards
    • Flameproofing and Gas Testing Knowledge
    • Extensive knowledge of Underground Equipment, including Conveyors and Diesel Equipment within an Underground Coal Operation
    • Strong knowledge and application of Reliability Engineering and Asset Management principles
    • Understanding of engineering best practices and new technologies relating to engineering principles and processes
    • Coaching, mentoring, training, and developing subordinates

    Reliability Engineer

    Job Description

    The Group AS&R’s purpose is to optimize plant and equipment life-cycle performance to improve Group production performance.  The Reliability Engineer is a technical advisor and provides support to the Engineering Manager, Section Engineer or Project Engineer To achieve this, Group AS&R expectations for the global function are:

    • Establish and manage the reliability of systems and processes at the operation in line with the Thungela Resources AS&R guidelines that includes the following: (Maintenance Tactics, Condition Monitoring, Total Fluid Management, Defect Elimination, Quality assurance, Life cycle costing and business improvement)
    • Manage the development of asset tactics across the operation and ensure that these tactics are effectively followed by operational personnel
    • Manage condition monitoring and total fluid management by ensuring that the required strategies are applied to identify and manage equipment risk
    • Manage repairable sub-assemblies (rotable), including ensuring that all standards and processes related to these elements are followed
    • Manage Reliability team including Planning Department, Condition Monitoring Department and Rotables Management Department
    • Manage the effective use of the ERP and Tactics Development systems at the operation
      • Act as the data steward for all the data in the maintenance management system to ensure that data is used as inputs in monitoring the effectiveness of asset tactics, maintenance planning and execution, and condition monitoring of assets through the compilation of reports and analysis
    • Completing RAM (Reliability, Availability & Maintainability) / LCC (Life-cycle cost) analyses on new projects or installations.  Ensures optimisation of systems and resources through providing the operations with relevant data and best practices
    • Monitor the performance and condition of key assets to identify opportunities for improvement
    • Compile business cases to motivate and justify the value of improvement ideas and Coordinate defect elimination activities
    • Use life cycle costing to support financial decision-making i.e. repair-replace decisions or investment in upgrades
    • Liaison with project engineer to ensure operational readiness is applied during the project phase for all new assets
    • Ensure effective leadership routines and engagement:
      • Develop a set of leadership routines, under guidance from your line manager and deploy those leadership routines effectively (critical routines are coaching, attending lower-level meetings, driving ORM and continuous improvement)
      • Show value for leadership routines and use them as a means to engage the organization, highlight focus areas, share and address challenges and recognise achievements
      • Accordingly, agree a set of leadership routines for your subordinates (where appropriate) based on their role and hold them accountable for compliance to routines and using them to drive outputs which support organisational and departmental strategy
    • Manage relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, understand and deliver on their operational needs, and identify and resolve issues timeously
    • Demonstrate behavior in line with Thungela Resources’ values, standards and control maintenance a professional workplace across all sites
    • Participate as an effective team member and work collaboratively with leaders, peers and others to achieve business goals
    • Contribute to the broader business by working with other leaders and teams in such a way that it optimizes the overall business results
    • This role is in the Technical Department at Band 6 and reports indirectly to the Principal AS&R

    Qualifications

    • B Tech/ BSC in Engineering (NQF 7)
    • Safety Course (advantageous)
    • Registered as a member of SACEA (advantageous)
    • Registered as a professional Engineer with the ECSA (advantageous)
    • Government Certificate of Competence for Mines & Works (GCC) (advantageous)
    • Reliability Engineers Program or equivalent (advantageous)
    • Failure analysis/RCA Program equivalent (advantageous)
    • Condition Monitoring Program or equivalent (advantageous)

    Experience

    • Minimum of 6-8 years of experience with the maintenance of OC, UG Machinery and Processing Plants, preferably in a coal mining environment
    • Extensive experience in asset management tactics, maintenance planning, condition monitoring or rotable management.
    • Mining or operational experience would be advantageous
    • Extensive experience in the use of the applicable ERP system (SAP)
    • Experience in Reliability Engineering
    • Experience in data analysis techniques related to reliability engineering
