    Unit Manager Environmental Engineering

    The Unit Manager Environmental Engineering carries a 7.2 appointment in line with the Mine Health and Safety Act. He/she is accountable for the planning and designing of optimal ventilation, refrigeration and occupational health processes, systems and strategies to sustain a safe and healthy working environment.

    Minimum Requirements:

     

    • Matric or equivalent
    • Chamber of Mines (COM) Advanced Certificate in Mine Environmental Control
    • Tertiary qualification in mining / engineering / occupational hygiene or related discipline
    • Have at least 10 years’ experience in Environmental Engineering or Occupational hygiene in a mining environment, of which 5 years should be in a middle management capacity
    • Computer literate with proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
    • Advanced experience working on Ventilation and Refrigeration computer simulation programmes
    • Be declared medically fit for the position and environment, as determined by a risk-based medical examination at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre and pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test, and such other tests as may be required to assess the applicant’s suitability for employment

    • Advanced proficiency in the short- and long-term planning and design of mine Ventilation and Refrigeration according to established standards, best practice and frameworks in a mechanised mining environment

    • Proven diagnostic and problem-solving skills
    • Strong decision-making skills
    • Extensive experience in the development, implementation and evaluation of management systems and database formulation
    • In-depth understanding and application of the relevant regulatory frameworks and requirements
    • Proven safety, health and environmental leadership/stewardship
    • Sound project management and organisational skills
    • Sound operational budgeting and cost management skills

    Duties and Responsibilities:

     

    • Apply Safety, Health and Hygiene principles, identify and mitigate associated risks in support of safe production.
    • Assess and respond to risk in line with the requirements of applicable legislation and regulation
    • Provide people leadership within the department by managing workload, assigning tasks, and reviewing/recognising outputs of team members
    • Provide ventilation engineering and occupational hygiene expertise to the business
    • Plan and design optimal ventilation, refrigeration and occupational hygiene processes, systems and strategies to sustain a safe and healthy working environment
    • Design and implement environmental engineering projects, enhancement and optimisation programmes aligned to the operational strategic plan and monitor progress accompanied by remediation strategies as required
    • Promote cross-functional working relationships, driving collaborative delivery with mutual support to meet the mine's objective
    • Measure, monitor and ensure compliance with applicable legislation and regulations
    • Attend and participate in key external forums, committees and industry associations as well as engage with external stakeholders such as the NNR, MHSC, Minerals Council and DMRE
