We’re on the lookout for an experienced Senior Process Engineer who will focus on strategic projects with Sappi Southern Africa and be responsible from the pre-feasibility phase of the project to the execution and optimization of these projects.

As a Senior Process Engineer (Projects), you will be responsible for:

• Evaluation through prefeasibility studies on various project proposal from the various mills
• Evaluation of medium and long term strategic projects with the group to ensure alignment with business strategy and sustainability targets
• Preparation of Project Proposal document, presentations and other related documentation required for the approval process
• Developed detail designs, balances and integration strategies of proposed projects
• Review the results of Design Reviews and provide guidance on improvements required in the designs or the review process.
• Liaise with environmental departments for EIA approvals and related studies requirements. Ensure that environmental standards are taken into account in all process designs. Consider the impact of environmental legislation changes on current processes as well as future changes and contribute to the development of upgrade strategies to address it.

• Evaluating project proposal from various mills, In collaboration with other process engineers and mill personnel.
• Understand the impact of group’s sustainability targets and integration of these objectives into project designs and solutions
• Coordinating and facilitating Design reviews, Structured What If Technique – SWIFT, Hazard and Operability Study – HAZOP
• Compiling training strategies and material for associated projects
• Compile FDSs and P&IDs were applicable. Control
• Review all major designs and provide input on improvements required. Act as a formal signatory for the final designs. Equipment sizing, 3D modelling, pipe/pump/fan sizing with utility requirements to ensure fit for purpose applications
• Ensure standards compliance for any external and internal documentation and project deliverables
• Accurate cost estimations for various phases of project requirements (Budget, Class 30, Class 10 etc.)
• Working with project managers to execute projects on time and within cost.

What are we looking for?

• Degree in Chemical Engineering or B Tech in Chemical Engineering with significant project experience
• Preferable registered professional engineer with ECSA
• 5-8 years of process / design experience in a heavy manufacturing environment
• Pulp and paper experience would be advantageous
