Senior Manager: Research & Development at Transnet

Position Purpose:

• To lead, manage and take accountability for the research, development, and design of novel world-class port infrastructure solutions, new technologies and standards.
• To execute Research & Development (R&D), innovative and integrative projects.
• To research and develop improvement solutions and position papers to existing infrastructure challenges.
• To refine the development of existing and new business at the South African ports, all in alignment with the National Ports Act.

Position outputs:

• Provide leadership, coordination and integration of engineering staff and services. Application of company standards and policies, to support the successful delivery of Research & Development objectives.
• To execute the research and development of Port and Built Environment infrastructure, systems and processes that will improve the efficiencies of port development and operations within Transnet as well as international markets.
• To discover and develop futuristic Port and Built Environment infrastructure, systems, processes and services that will enable TNPA to become a leading role player in the global market.
• To execute R&D, innovative and integrative projects by formulation of task teams/technical working groups, leading and co-ordinating team efforts, including research and studying of available literature, writing of position papers, technical guidelines and standards for TNPA.
• To provide expert insight and guidance in the planning and development of Port and Built Environment infrastructure as per the National Ports Act.
• Network with national and international R&D institutions and individuals to stay up to date with the international body of knowledge.

To publish technical notes, guidelines, papers, etc., in regard to:

• External Journals, Publications, Professional Online Platforms, presenting at International and Local Conferences, participate in Technical Webinars, etc., as well as to share and showcase Transnet’s technological advancements and prowess.
• Internally within Transnet for the sharing and dissemination of knowledge.
• Create growth and development opportunities for engineering staff and promote professional development and registration within TNPA.
• Mentoring of Senior Engineers, Technologists and Technicians allocated to the Engineering Centre of Excellence (CoE).

Qualifications & Experience:

• BTech or BEng or BSc in Built Environment, Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering.
• Professional Registration as an Engineering Technologist (Pr. Eng. Tech) or Professional Engineer (Pr. Eng.) with the Engineering Council of South Africa, or to be obtained within 12 months of appointment.
• 10 years engineering working experience.
• Working experience in Ports and Port Engineering would be an added advantage.
