    Senior Lecturer (Faculty of Humanities: Department of Anthropology & Development Studies)

    Job Description:

    The Department of Anthropology and Development Studies at UJ hosts two subjects, namely Anthropology and Development Studies. We offer various degrees and courses at undergraduate and post graduate level in these subjects. Our undergraduate classes are large, from 700 first years, 500 in second year and 300 in third year. We offer our courses in a blended learning approach, both in person and online. Our young and dynamic colleagues have a range of expertise in Anthropology, Development Studies, Politics, and Sociology, and have interests in the medical humanities, human rights and social justice, childhood and gender, climate change and the environment, water and food security, urbanisation, and the political economy of development.

    Responsibilities:  

    • Teaching in Anthropology at the undergraduate level and in Anthropology and Development Studies at the Honours levels in a blended (in person and online) teaching and learning context
    • Supervise post graduate students at Honours, MA and PhD levels
    • Engage in research, and produce peer-reviewed, accredited publications
    • Participation in departmental administrative duties and strategic planning
    • Engagement in activities and events in the Humanities faculty, the university, and academic associations
    • Involvement in community engagement  

    Minimum requirements

    • Doctorate in Development Studies or Anthropology, or a related field
    • Five years university teaching experience to large classes and using blended learning
    • Experience in supervising Honours, MA and PhD students
    • Peer reviewed published research outputs in accredited national or international journals and books
    • Planned or published monograph

    • Relevant teaching – related, research, and supervision skills
    • Good interpersonal and communication skills
    • Good planning and administration skills

     Recommendations:

    • Must be willing to work in an interdisciplinary environment
    • May be required to travel between campuses
    • May be required to work outside of office hours during peak periods – selections, registration, examination and graduation
    • Must take part in departmental and faculty events, committees and meetings
