Research and Development Engineer/Scientist: Cloud and Network Architectures at Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)

About The Job

• The CSIR has a vacancy for a Research and Development Engineer/Scientist: Cloud and Network Architectures in the Cloud, Network Architectures and Services Research Group within the Next Generation Enterprises and Institutions Cluster. The incumbent will be responsible for undertaking research, development and implementation on various processes, systems, products, services, and tools relating to Software-Defined Networking (SDN), Network Functions Virtualisation (NFV), 5G, Internet of Things (IoT), Network Slicing, Cloud and Edge Computing within a Research and Development (R&D) environment, with the aim to develop advanced and emerging Cloud and Network Architecture solutions for both private and public sectors. This position is based in Pretoria.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct research on SDN/NFV, 5G, Network Slicing and Cloud Computing as a specialist in this field(s), and work on the analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation of new and/or legacy systems/subsystems/products/processes/patents/services/tools and other technologies within the Cloud and Network Architecture field;
• Work on research and development projects relating to Cloud and Network Architectures, troubleshoot problems, and direct implementation of Cloud and Network Architecture projects according to best practice;
• Understand DevOps responsibilities and able to carry out and support development work across the Research Group’s projects.
• Work on the integration of various areas of research in Cloud and Network Architecture in order to develop new technology offerings and improve existing technology offerings;
• Support new avenues of knowledge application in Cloud and Network Architectures, develop proposals to internal/external clients and source research funding;
• Understand and respond to the needs and requirements of clients;
• Work on a portfolio of R&D projects, often integrating approaches across several fields of research or disciplines.

Qualifications, Skills And Experience

• A Bachelor’s degree in electronic/computer engineering, computer science, or a related/relevant field with at least one years' experience in telecommunication networks (e.g., 3G, 4G, 5G);
• Must have experience with Open-Source development tools and an excellent understanding of the Linux OS;
• Proficiency in Java/C/C++ and scripting programming language;
• Must enjoy working on the core/lower levels of systems and be able to develop good core level software;
• Knowledge of cloud computing platforms (e.g. OpenStack and/or AWS and/or Azure) and telecommunication over cloud would be advantageous;
• Knowledge of docker and other container platforms would be advantageous;
• Knowledge of data analytics would be advantageous;
• Ability to communicate on strategic level (both verbally and in writing) and ability to interact efficiently with diverse teams of people (researchers, customers, developers and engineers);
• Formal Cloud and Network Architectures related studies/courses/experience would be advantageous;
• All international qualifications require an evaluation report / certificate issued by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).
