    Role Clarification & Key Performance Areas

    • The Department of Biotechnology is recognized for its leadership in teaching, research and innovation; with local, regional and global impact. The department aim to produce outstanding professionals in the field of biotechnology and contribute to the body of scientific knowledge through research and innovation for the advancement of society.
    • Therefore, the department seeks to appoint a highly motivated, flexible, and innovative technical officer on a permanent basis for technical support, laboratory practical teaching support and data management activities.

    The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key responsibility areas:

    • Contribute to undergraduate practical teaching and consultation in the department.
    • Provide technical assistance in research laboratories.
    • Contribute to departmental procurement.
    • Responsible for departmental and research budget management.
    • Maintain inventories of laboratory consumables and equipment.
    • Maintain departmental health and safety standards.
    • Collect, record and store material safety data sheets of all purchased consumables.
    • Assist with the maintenance of key laboratory equipment.

    Minimum Requirements

    • A BSc degree in Biological Sciences (e.g. Biotechnology, Biochemistry, and Microbiology Genetics).
    • 2 years relevant laboratory experience (at a university or industry).
    • Proficiency in computer programmes/software packages e.g. Word; Excel / MS Office Suites / Power Point.

    Required competencies:

    • Excellent record-keeping.
    • Attention to detail.
    • Verbal and written communication skills with a good command of the English language.

    Added advantage and preferences:

    • Scientific procurement and inventory control.
    • Biotechnological health and safety procedures.
