Manager Accounting Africa Operations at South32

The purpose of the role is to:

• provide leadership, expertise and advice to ensure reporting of timely and accurate financial accounting information and compliance for the Group and JV Participants to ensure all technical accounting and reporting regulatory requirements are met;
• provide information to enable effective management decision making;
• manage all internal financial accounting processes to meet monthly, quarterly, half yearly and yearly reporting requirements;
• oversee and ensure that a fit for purpose internal control environment operates and is effective for financial accounting and reporting requirements;
• The role interacts with a variety of senior stakeholders and holds statutory positions for in-country legal entities.

REQUIREMENTS:

• Serious contenders will hold a Chartered Accountant designation with a minimum of 8 years’ experience in financial accounting and reporting involving global operations and multiple currencies of which at least 3 years in a leadership and supervisory capacity;
• Experience in operational external and internal financial accounting and reporting as well as costing processes is essential;
• Strong technical accounting skills and broad experience in SAP together with excellent communication, collaboration and problems solving skills is essential.
   

CORE ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Monitor and ensure delivery of accurate and timely financial accounting and reporting;
• Lead and drive the accounting team to achieve period end close processes according to set metrics/timetables, liaising with other functional areas (eg Tax, Treasury, Global Business Services) to ensure timely completion;
• Review and have audited all statutory financial statements for African entities;
• Liaise with external auditors in the provision of required information for half year, year end and entity financial statement purposes;
• Ensure a compliant and effective internal control environment as specified by Group, and complete verification processes over internal controls as scheduled and/or requested;
• Regularly review all accounting balances to ensure accuracy, existence, completeness and recoverability;
• Responsible for review and accuracy of the weekly 4- week cash forecast;
• Identify and implement opportunities to improve and simplify various accounting activities;
• Review and approve financial system master data changes for African entities;
• Provide all necessary financial accounting information as requested by JV Participants;
• Engage with various internal and external senior stakeholders providing accounting advisory support and liaison with Group as required;
• Lead, coach, empower and hold accountable team members to ensure delivery against performance targets.
