    Lecturer in Academic Literacy (Afrikaans and English) P000643

    PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

    The candidate appointed to this position will be responsible for the teaching of modules in Academic Literacy at undergraduate level.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Teaching and Learning and Higher Degree supervision   

    • Take responsibility for a full teaching load for Academic Literacy in English and Academic Literacy in Afrikaans modules (and carry out related duties, i.e. marking, guided development of assessments and learning materials). Keep class discipline and adhere to all the requirements for the administration of the modules as required by the NWU rules and policy.

     Personal Research and Innovation and/or Creative Outputs       

    • Contribute towards the research output of the School of Languages.
    • Candidate is expected to register for a PhD within the first 2 years of their appointment and complete the qualification within 5 years of their appointment.

    Academic Leadership and Administration 

    • Fulfilling management tasks and duties in service of the university, as the arise. 
    • Good organisational and administrative skills

    Social responsiveness (sharing of expertise and community engagement)        

    • Involvement in relevant community engagement projects.      

     Occupational Health and Safety (OHS)

    • Cooperate with management, OHS officials and colleagues to help everyone meet the legal requirements, whilst upholding and maintaining general occupational health and safety standards and practices.

    Minimum requirements

    • Applicable master’s degree in English and/or Afrikaans Linguistics, Applied Linguistics or General Linguistics
    • Should have some experience in teaching Academic literacy in Afrikaans and Academic literacy in English at tertiary.
    • A minimum of two (2) years’ experience in teaching at a tertiary institution

    ADDED ADVANTAGE & PREFERENCES:

    • Membership of relevant subject specific societies and organisations
    • Experience in teaching Academic Literacy or English/Afrikaans Linguistics or General Linguistics or Applied Linguistics

    KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

    • Fundamental knowledge of key issues in Academic Literacy
    • Excellent English language and communication skills
    • Excellent level of computer literacy and LMS development
    • Computer skills, including MS Office, internet and email.
    • Knowledge of new and innovative teaching methods: e-learning, multimedia and classroom practice

    KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:

    • Work independently, but also as a team.
    • Have very good people skills.
    • Professional and ethical behaviour.
    • Be able to act as a mentor for junior staff
