    Lecturer - Department of Pharmacology - School of Medicine - Faculty of Health Sciences

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The incumbent will be responsible for:

    • Teaching basic, clinical and regulatory pharmacology at tertiary level including the theoretical basis of scientific principles, experimental design, and regulatory affairs;
    • Being intimately involved in research in a related field, including the establishment of a sustainable research niche aligned to the Departmental focus areas, and publication thereof;
    • Acting as a supervisor for postgraduate students;
    • Being involved with curriculum development/innovation.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    LECTURER (BASIC SCIENCES):

    • A Health Sciences-related scientific degree, with associated Master’s
    • Experience in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students in the allied health professions;
    • Teaching experience in basic sciences-related techniques (such as advanced cell culturing, analytical pharmacology, molecular investigations or proteomics);
    • Bioinformatics;
    • Registration with a relevant professional council/body;
    • Research experience in Pharmacology or pharmacologically related areas;
    • At least 2 accredited publication (Ideally more, preferably in last 3 years and in ISI journals).

    LECTURER (CLINICAL):

    • A Healthcare Professional qualification with associated Master’s degree;
    • Experience in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students in the allied health professions;
    • Experience in basic sciences-related techniques (such as advanced cell culturing, analytical pharmacology, molecular investigations or proteomics);
    • Registration with a relevant professional council/body;
    • Research experience in Pharmacology or pharmacologically related areas;
    • 1 DHET accredited publication.

    REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

    • Good verbal and written communication skills;
    • Good interpersonal and mentoring skills;
    • Good computer skills;
    • Scientific writing skills;
    • Proactive and goal-oriented nature;
    • Leadership qualities;
    • Dedicated to professional development, including obtaining a Doctoral degree (if not yet obtained).

    ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

    • Teaching experience of at least one year in Pharmacology, Pharmacy or Regulatory Pharmacology including tutoring.

    Candidate with a Clinical Profession qualification:

    • The all-inclusive remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as detemined by UP policy and Occupation Specific Dispensation salary guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZU Health medical aid schemes.

    Candidate with a Health Sciences qualification:

    • The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO Health medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
