    Junior Lecturer: Academic Literacy (M000720)

    PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

    The candidate appointed to this position will be responsible for the teaching of modules in Academic Literacy at the undergraduate level.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Teaching and Learning:

    • Take responsibility for a full teaching load for ALDE111 and 122 (and carry out related duties, i.e. Marking, guided development of assessments and learning materials).
    • Keep class discipline and adhere to all the requirements for the administration of ALDE111 and 122 as required by the NWU rules and policy.

    Research:

    • Contribute towards the research output of the School of Languages.

    Academic Leadership and Administration:

    • Fulfilling management tasks and duties in service of the university, as the arise.
    • Good organisational and administrative skills.

    Community Engagement:

    • Involvement in community service projects.

    Occupational Health and Safety:

    • Cooperate with management, OHS officials and colleagues to help everyone meet the legal requirements, whilst upholding and maintaining general occupational health and safety standards and practices.

    Minimum requirements

    • An honour’s degree (NQF level 8) in English/ Linguistics/ Applied Linguistics/ related field.
    • A minimum of one (1) years’ lecturing /tutoring/ teaching experience.
    • A minimum of one (1) year LMS experience.

    KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

    • Fundamental knowledge of key issues in Academic Literacy.
    • Excellent English language and communication skills.
    • Excellent level of computer literacy and LMS development.
    • Computer skills, including MS Office, internet and e-mail.
    • Knowledge of new and innovative teaching methods: E-learning, multimedia and classroom practice.

    KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:

    • Good interpersonal skills.
    • Professional work ethic.
    • Student support experience (for example, SI facilitation, tutoring, peer mentoring).
    • Ability and willingness to work with a variety of colleagues and students.
    • Passionate about language teaching and learning.
