    Instrumentation Technician: Antarctica | approximately fifteen months contract (OC23/2023)

    Requirements:

    • Must be in possession of a trade certification or a National Diploma or Degree in Instrumentation/Mechatronics/Electrical Engineering (Light Current) or relevant comparable qualification, with a minimum of three (3) years relevant post trade/qualification experience.
    • Advanced experience in PLC and SCADA Programming (fault finding and programming).
    • Experience in industrial instrumentation and electrical and electronic systems in terms of design and fault finding.
    • Experience with variable speed drives (VSD) and servo drives; electrical fault finding and panel design (from 24VDC up to 400VAC); HMI programming and fault finding.
    • Knowledge and understanding of electrical schematics.
    • The incumbent has to be familiar with good workshop practices, including an understanding of current work health and safety policies.
    • The incumbent must be computer literate, have good verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work in a team.

    Duties:

    • The incumbent will be responsible for providing maintenance, fault-finding and repairs of the instrumentation and equipment at SANAE IV facility in Antarctica.
    • Must ensure the efficient serviceability and operation of the instrumentation and equipment.
    • Inspect, tests and repairs to instruments and systems used to indicate, record, and control processes and equipment.
    • Test the accuracy of flowmeters, pressure gauges, temperature indicators, controllers and other recording, indicating or controlling instruments.
    • Ensure the serviceability and operation of all additional base related technical systems and equipment.
    • Assist the team in repairing and fixing breakdowns on infrastructure, equipment and vehicles.
    • Conduct tasks related to general maintenance and operations.
    • Perform daily routine checks and standard maintenance on the systems and equipment.
    • Prepare monthly reports on all work performed, conditions of instrumentation and equipment, and spares utilised or required.
    • Prepare schematic drawings, sketches, and reports to reflect changes or alterations made in instruments, circuits, and systems.
    • Record calibrations made, parts and components used, and inventory of parts on hand.
    • Conformance with environmental and safety requirements.
    • Conduct safety inspections.

    • Following the interview and the technical exercise, the selection panel will recommend candidates to attend a generic managerial competency assessment in compliance with the DPSA directive on the implementation of competency based assessments.
    • The person appointed to this position will be subjected to a security clearance, the signing of performance agreement and employment contract.
