    Field Ranger - Kogelberg Nature Reserve Complex - Oudebosch

    Job Description

    CapeNature seeks to appoint a dynamic individual to assist with reserve operations, integrated catchment management, ecological data collection and monitoring, law enforcement and compliance, eco-tourism management, and infrastructure and equipment maintenance at Kogelberg Nature Reserve Complex - Oudebosch

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    KRA 1: Support the implementation of targeted ecosystem conservation and restoration initiatives to enhance biodiversity resilience.

    • Assist with Integrated Work Plans and IAPO planning, implementation, tracking and reporting.
    • Assist the implementation of ICM and NRM projects (quality control and assurance).
    • Implement ecological matrix and priority projects for the greater Kogelberg Complex.
    • Participate in any disaster management responses at a local level including fires, flooding, oil spills, disease monitoring, and surveillance.

    KRA 2: Support landscape conservation and stewardship in ways that address biodiversity loss.

    • Support the implementation of the priority species conservation plans and/or initiatives.
    • Support the maintenance of functional partnerships to address biodiversity loss.
    • Implement the biodiversity legal mandate through compliance and enforcement actions.
    • Participate and contribute to Environmental Awareness, Education and Capacity building interventions.

    KRA 3: Promote the biodiversity economy and enhance biodiversity access and sustainable use.

    • Support the implementation of job creation opportunities through the EPWP programme.
    • Ensure CapeNature tourism products are well managed and maintained/ensure infrastructure is fit for purpose.
    • Maintain and improve Infrastructure, equipment, and asset management processes.

    KRA 4: Advocate for behavioral change and promote voluntary compliance.

    • Provide support to stakeholder engagement activities.
    • Respond to environmental criminal incidents (initial response and actions, investigation, operational planning, and reporting)
    • Conduct compliance inspections to monitor access for Tourism and Non-Tourism User Groups (Contractors, Researchers, and Project Partners).
    • Implementation of the Integrated Compliance Plan on and Off Reserve and carry out law enforcement patrols.
    • Act as an Ecological Control Officer for Film crews and production teams.

    KRA 5: Assume accountability for ensuring performance, governance, and risk management.

    • Supervise the EPWP team, monitors, and volunteers.
    • Conduct regular infrastructure inspections and assist with maintenance and service of facilities.
    • Implement all relevant Occupational Health and Safety legislation, policies and standards and ensure adherence thereto.
    • Assist with risk assessments and quality assurance audits.
    • Participate in Reserve Management meetings.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    • National Diploma in Nature Conservation or National Certificate: Conservation Resource Guardianship (NQF level 2)
    • At least 2 years of job-related experience.
    • Computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, QGIS)
    • A valid EB driver’s license.
    • Bilingualism in two of the three official languages of the Western Cape.
    • Knowledge and experience in ecological monitoring
    • Knowledge and experience in Fire Fighting
    • Crew Boss level or higher qualification.
    • No criminal record.

    RECOMMENDATIONS:

    • Possession of a valid Peace Officer’s certificate
    • Appointed Fisheries Control Officer
    • Appointed as EMI Grade 5
    • ICS100 / 200 course
    • Project management

    COMPETENCIES:

    • Willingness to work irregular hours, after-hours, and perform stand-by duties.
    • Thorough working knowledge of QGIS software.
    • Good written, verbal, interpersonal, and communication skills in English.
    • Physical fitness to be able to perform strenuous activities.
    • Ability to work in integrated teams.
    • Analytical/technical mindset.
    • Administration skills.
    • Inter-personal skills
    • Problem-solving skills
