    Clinical Assistant: Small Animal Surgery, Department of Companion Animal Clinical Studies

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The successful candidate will actively participate in the following areas:

    • An advanced training programme in Small Animal Surgery with the view of obtaining the MMedVet (SAS) degree within the prescribed time;  
    • Teaching and practical training of undergraduate veterinary and veterinary nursing students;
    • Departmental research and publications;
    • Clinical service in the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital and surrounding community, including a 24-hour service; and
    • Community engagement activities.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    • BVSc-degree or BVMCh or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
    • Registration as a Veterinarian with the SAVC or eligibility for authorisation;
    • Two years’ applicable as a veterinarian completed upon commencement of appointment or training of at least one year in the specific field as an intern at a recognised training facility.

    REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

    • Commitment to further academic development;
    • Subject knowledge of small animal surgery;
    • Appropriate language and communication skills;
    • Good interpersonal skills; and
    • Good computer skills (Windows, MS Office, internet).

    ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

    • Two years’ experience in small animal surgery;
    • Teaching experience;
    • Exposure to research in an appropriate field of veterinary small animal surgery; and
    • Publications in the areas of veterinary science or small animal surgery and/or related field.
