    Chief Safety Officer

    Minimum Qualifications / Experience

    • Grade 12 Certificate.
    • National Diploma in Safety Management or equivalent qualification in Mining.
    • Bachelor’s degree/B-Tech Degree in Safety Management would be advantageous.
    • Blasting Certificate.
    • Valid driver’s licence (Code EB/08).
    • SAMTRAC/SHEMTRAC Certificate
    • COMSOC 1 and 2 Certificates
    • Extensive experience in an integrated Risk Management Programme.
    • Internal Auditing Course
    • At least 5 years’ experience in safety management in the mining Industry, especially in Underground and Opencast Mining
    • Strong knowledge on RCAT and or ICAM incident investigation Technique
    • Professional knowledge of safety aspects with experience in integrated SHE management systems in a mining environment, i.e. OHSAS18001 / ISO45001, ISO31001
    • Ability to meet the requirements of the appointment of Chief Safety Officer in terms of the Mine Health and Safety Act
    • Good written and verbal communication skills in English and the ability to interact at all levels both internally and externally
    • Must be Computer literate in Microsoft Office i.e. Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
    • Strong knowledge of accounting and auditing standards
    • Candidates must be medically fit to perform duties (Determined by Occupational Medical Practitioner)

    Duties and responsibilities

    • Fulfil the duties of a Chief Safety Officer in terms of the Mine Health and Safety Act
    • Develop, implement and maintain a Safety Management System and a Risk Management programme to ensure achievement of objectives, by establishing and implementing approved medium and long-term plans, aligned to the Company’s strategic business goals.
    • Provide specialist technical knowledge and advice to all levels of management and resolve a wide range of Safety and Risk Management-related problems and related interfacing issues, requiring solutions for new projects, unusual conditions and corrective measures
    • Manage the Company’s Safety System which is based on OHSAS18001 requirements and the Risk Management programme to maintain corporate standards by:
    • Continually reviewing programmes and implementing adjustments to ensure alignment with developments and safety standards on the Mine and within the mining industry.
    • Conduct continual operational Risk Assessments & evaluate Baseline Risk Assessments
    • Provide information, support and assist HSE regional office to ensure all policies, COP’s, standards & procedures and guidelines are developed
    • Analysing trends, interpreting results and implementing recommended corrective action mine-wide
    • Facilitating change processes to ensure continuous improvements to internal control systems, employee participation and management support.
    • Develop and implement safety-related policies, procedures, control standards and measures.
    • Review and update existing cross functional Mine SHE and Mandatory COP’s, Standards & Procedures.
    • MOSH participation, feedback and implementation of initiatives.
    • Manage subordinates to deliver the outputs of their jobs
    • Develop effective working relationships with consultants, liaise with IOM’s and any other Governmental authorities and participate in seminars/forums to keep abreast of developments within the mining industry.
    • Understand and interpret all relevant safety-related legislations, regulations and standards as it applies to the Mine’s operations, confirm interpretation with the Inspector of Mines and Machinery and manage implementation.
    • Inform management of any legislative changes and implications thereof and proactively review the necessary programmes.
