    Head Of Engineering

    Job description

    The Head of Engineering is responsible for the overall engineering function at South Deep, including all infrastructure, trackless fleet, machinery, equipment, buildings, utilities, capital construction, engineering employees, communication and control as well as engineering systems.

    The appointee will:

    • Hold formal tertiary qualifications in Engineering, i.e. a degree or diploma or equivalent.
    • Have a mines and works government certificate of competency as mechanical or electrical engineer.
    • Have extensive experience, knowledge and skills in the majority of the following areas: vertical shafts, logistics, process plants, trackless equipment, capital construction projects and/or utility supply, communication and control, and knowledge of fridge plants will be advantageous.
    • Have extensive experience in and knowledge of engineering maintenance systems including critical principles and concepts. This must include extensive knowledge of the administrative processes required to inform maintenance systems.
    • Have a thorough understanding of the engineering skills requirements and organizational design for a large deep level mechanized mining operation.
    • Minimum of 10 years’ experience as appointed Operations Engineer and senior management role.
    • Have an understanding of the regulators.
    • Be a great leader of people.

    Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    • STRATEGY AND BUSINESS PLANNING
      • Contribute to the translation of corporate strategy into business plans, engineering strategies, action plans and budgets as part of the overall planning process.
      • Ensure the engineering functions’ long term strategies are distilled and focused for delivery on time.
    • LEADERSHIP
      • Operate and live every day as a Gold Fields ambassador.
      • Adopt and reinforce the Gold Fields DNA.
      • Be a great leader of people.
    • MANAGEMENT
      • Ensure strict adherence to maintenance work management principles (percent planned work, adherence to schedule work, number of breakdowns, etc.) to obtain maximum plant availability at minimum maintenance costs per unit produced.
      • Provide governance, quality assurance and set standards and norms for the engineering discipline across the mine and ensure strict compliance to these set norms.
      • Define operating processes for engineering, capital and environmental engineering including meeting schedules and reporting requirements.
      • Provide thought leadership in the mining industry in South Africa in the field of mechanized mining to align the training and development of the future workforce.
    • PERFORMANCE
      • Develop and implement policies, codes of practice, standards and work practices necessary to ensure a safe, health and efficient engineering function. Implement the necessary management systems to monitor and report on compliance to applicable regulatory and internal obligations.
      • Ensure working conditions that will support an efficient engineering function.
    • ORGANISATIONAL DESIGN AND HUMAN RESOURCES
      • Design an effective engineering operating model to support achievement of business goals and objectives.
      • Implement a talent management and recruitment strategy that will ensure long term sustainable skills for the engineering function.
      • Implement skills development infrastructure, processes, systems and resources to meet all the engineering skills requirements of South Deep.
    • CAPITAL
      • Responsible for the performance of the sustaining capital construction function at South Deep. Implement an effective and cost efficient capital program at South Deep guided by the overall business strategies and objectives.
