Purpose of Job/ Role Intent

• Provide technical direction and specification during project execution and plant optimisation/support activities with regard to piping engineering on projects. Specification of piping and mechanical engineering technical requirements through translation of owner requirements and knowledge of Sasol Specifications and International Codes. Comply with the South African Occupational Health and Safety Act Fulfil Mechanical Engineering role in project risk, management studies and reviews. Guide detail piping design office regarding complex design and acceptance criteria.
• Conduct Quality assurance reviews to guide engineers and ensure compliance to project requirements, ensure mechanical equipment, piping and plant conform to applicable legal regulations and health and safety standards. Provide quality assurance policy and implement a system to ensure piping design of required integrity is supplied. Review overall project quality goals for piping engineering on project, monitor quality progress of deliverables. Measure and report on piping engineering performance on projects.
• Provide functional home for and develop piping and mechanical engineers' including talent management. Maintain mechanical engineering's team "depth charts" (experience and skill level) for input to recruitment and competency development. Provide discipline specific input into content of GDP apprenticeship model. Mentors and guide less experienced engineers. Accountable for best practice knowledge transfer and will act as role model within field, coaching and mentoring individuals within organization, including JV and project team engineers
• Assist in selection of service provides and vendors by measuring their technical competence and performance.
• Technical specialization in piping design, material and fabrication of Petro-chemical systems. Subject matter expert on piping design and piping components and piping systems.
• Act as an specialist consultant on piping specific topics group wide. Facilitate troubleshooting RCA and solution development;
• Define and develop up to date discipline specific standards, best practices, templates, procedures and training for piping specific engineering work effort taking into account lessons learnt and industry standards.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience required

Qualifications:

• B.Eng Mechanical or higher qualification,
• PR Eng. registration;

Experience:

• Minimum of 15 years engineering experience in the Petrochemical/chemical industry covering areas such as pressure vessel design, piping design and piping fabrication;
• with exposure to detail piping engineering design, project execution, fabrication/construction, training and development;
• Expert knowledge of Codes and Standards used in Petrochemical/Chemical industries (ASME, ASTM, API, BS, NACE, etc.);
• Consulting with regard to the Pressurised Equipment Regulation (PER) and its implication (especially w.r.t pressure vessels and piping etc.;
• Expert on material selection, welding , heat treatment, inspection and its integration into piping design;
• Exposure to Mechanical engineering activities during Project execution (P&ID's, HAZOP's and model reviews)
