    Healthcare Unit Manager

    Job Description
    Clé du Cap, which means Key to the Cape, is a unique village in the tranquil suburb of Kirstenhof. Set against the spectacular backdrop of the Constantiaberg mountain, with the ocean and the famous vineyards of Constantia only a few kilometres away, it offers an exciting blend of Cape charm and stylish French design.

    This exclusive retirement village managed by the well respected Faircape Group has a vacancy for a skilled and capable Unit Manager (Registered Nurse) to take overall responsibility for the high end, busy and technologically advanced healthcare Centre with both long term frail care and sub acute patients.

    SPECIFIC DUTIES INCLUDE BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:

    Staffing And Staff Management

    • Report to Nursing Services Manager daily and via set reporting weekly
    • Manage Duty Sr and Receptionist directly and all other staff indirectly
    • Review job descriptions with HR when needed
    • Drive performance appraisals twice a year with all staff in the facility
    • Do interviews for all staff replacements at the facility and recommend best candidates
    • Ensure full staffing on each shift – manage Healthcare Administrator and Duty Sr
    • Approve all staff rosters
    • Manage induction / orientation process and welcoming of all new staff
    • Approve leave requests
    • Approve shift change requests
    • Oversee and monitor agency and privately employed care and nursing staff – take action when needed
    • Liaise with HR regarding disciplinary matters and issue warnings when needed
    • Attend CCMA with HR when needed
    • Continuous liaising with HR on any employee relations matters
    • Have regular (weekly) staff meetings to discuss issues at hand and allow for feedback from all

    Training

    • Attend relevant management and clinical education programmes
    • Address ongoing clinical skills and training needs within the facility with staff and inform Training Manager
    • Encourage staff development and ongoing education
    • Implement training programmes to new and existing staff as per specific training plan

    Admissions And Discharges

    • Manage all admissions to the unit with the HCA and Duty Sister on shift
    • Interview prospective residents and their families, obtain all relevant medical reports as per company procedure and provide counselling where required
    • Manage discharge process with family and residents and ensure discharge plan in place where necessary

    Residents And Family Interaction

    • Have full knowledge and communicate types and levels of services offered within the facility (ie long term and/or sub acute) to interested persons enquiring about the facility
    • Interface with families regulary and where support, assistance or decision making input is required
    • Attend family meetings with Duty Sister
    • Resolve complaints from residents and family members
    • Develop a professional clinical and caring relationship with all residents receiving care
    • Provide effective education, advice and counselling to the resident about the matters relating to the facility, maintenance and/or staff
    • Be able to discuss with residents their individual care plan and aspects of their health, condition and prognosis where possible.
    • Refer resident to appropriate medical professional where necessary

    Village Residents And Services Offered

    • Communicate regularly with Village Manager and assist with healthcare matters regarding village residents. Discuss any issues that may overlap with healthcare
    • Manage Village Sister and approve billings
    • Manage the 6 monthly visits to all village residents by the Village Sister
    • Attend bi weekly MDT meetings to discuss lonely and vulnerable residents and implement action plan

    Nursing And Care

    • Attend and supervise the nursing handover procedure daily as per the policy
    • Be aware of all resident information exchanged during handover
    • Use handover to communicate important notices to staff
    • Strive to achieve optimal level of care for all residents, and ensure staff adhere to scope of practice and best practice regulations
    • Implement ethical guidelines and provisions of relevant legislation in caregiving in the facility
    • Liaise with Nursing Services Manager and Clinical head regardingany health/medical problems concering residents if their assigned medical proactitioner is not suitable.
    • Inform Nursing Services Manager and Clinical Head of any situations concerning resident’s care that requires intervention or follow up.
    • Review care plans with Duty Sister when necessary
    • Manage emergency care response procedure
    • Refer any residents requiring additional care to the appropriate hospital or other facility or medical practitioner involved.
    • Liaise with on site OT, dietician and social worker in terms of resident care where necessary
    • Monitor nursing/care notes written in Cardex weekly and day/night report and record and sign

    Risk Management And Emergencies

    • Supervise implementation of infection control procedures during any outbreak or suspected infection occuring
    • Record and action any health related incidents that occur in the healthcare and village and report to Claremont as per company procedure
    • Attend monthly H&S meetings and take action as needed
    • Do H&S checks on iauditor according to procedure
    • Plan and supervise fire drills and evacuation plans
    • Be contactable at all times by means of company cell phone and respons to emergencies
    • Inform legal dept at Claremont of any possible conflicts and follow up
    • Implement plans, prepare the facility and be present at all inspections (DOH and DSD)

    Administration, Reporting And Ecp

    • Prepare reports and submissions in line with responsibilities such as the weekly report on the facility to the Nursing Services Manager
    • Read and sign off on all incidents and send to Claremont as per company procedure
    • Monitor and approve all requisitions via the HCA to Claremont office
    • Communicate and report to support team and Claremont HOD’s on relevant matters
    • Report to and liaise with CEO directly
    • Oversee and manage ECP care plans and nursing records on the system
    • Monitor the charting on ECP via spot checks and discuss with duty sisters
    • Inform operations manager of problems with ECP through Healthcare Administrator
    • Oversee services of meals, laundry, cleaning, maintenance, H&S and report any anomalies to the relevant support manager

    Financial

    • Manage available resources efficiently
    • Provide rationale for any additional cost requirements
    • Manage consumables and equipment and records of utilisation
    • Liaise with accounts department where required
    • Negotiate tariffs in conjunction with Financial Manager for healthcare admissions based on availability vs demand and the required level of care of a resident
    • Oversee expenditure of the facility and inform Financial Manager of situations or issues pertaining to tariffs, admissions, payment of accounts, ordering of consumables, etc.

    Requirements

    • Qualifications- Relevant tertiary qualification to lead to registration as Professional Nurse with SANC
    • Experience and Knowledge - At least 5-10 years of experience in nursing, experience in geriatrics advantageous, experience in a similar leadership position highly advantageous, recent hospital experience
    • Skills and Attributes - Strong interpersonal skills, professional communication, managerial skills, making sound decisions, computer literate, fully bilingual in Afrikaans and English, Informed knowledge on Dementia and Alzheimers disease, frail care, palliative care, strokes.
    • Ability to work under pressure and lead a team, professional, focused, compassion for the elderly, be able to converse with people on different levels - staff, families, MDT and other professionals coming into the facility, ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Working Hours- Normal working days are Monday to Friday, 07h00 to 16h00. As the manager of the facility, you are required to be available after hours to tend to emergencies
