    Human Factors and Safety (HFS) Competence Area Leader

    Job Description

    Applications are invited for an appointment in the Transnet Centre of Systems Engineering (TCSE) contained in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment. The TCSE aims to resolve significant challenges across socio-technical disciplinary and organizational boundaries in the systems space in a harmonized and integrated fashion in industry. It conducts research and develops a feeder stream of highly qualified systems people.
           
    Brief Description       

    Qualifications:

    • An MSc in Human Factors and a PhD or substantial progress towards the completion of a PhD.

    Requirements:

    • A minimum of 7 years work related experience in transport logistics and rail;
    • an in-depth knowledge of Railway Safety Legislation and Standards; Ergonomic / Human Factors Standards; Health and Safety principles and Research methods;
    • proficiency in Human Factors and Safety (HFS) knowledge.
    • Teaching experience,
    • supervision of Honours and Masters students across disciplines,
    • and research output in the field.
    • Involvement in/registration with relevant professional bodies would be advantageous.

    The HFS Competence Leader position requires a well-experienced

    • practical and forward-looking individual with a capability to grasp a significant number of complex variables and the ability to find often invisible,
    • inter-relatedness and interdependencies between socio-technical and intangible concepts.
    • This person should be able to work in a dynamic environment and be a good communicator.

    Duties:

    The HFS Competence Leader will, but not exclusively:

    • grow, plan and manage HFS competencies jointly identified within the TCSE, University, and industry, through education, training, research and collaboration with external parties;
    • develop short courses for industry in addition to Honours and Masters level courses and programmes;
    • collaborate closely across Schools and Faculties in order to leverage the multi-disciplinary application of HFS. Both local and international collaboration is required to develop and grow HFS competencies in Southern Africa;
    • supervise Honours and Masters students across the faculties to drive the research agenda;
    • present to Senior Management in order to achieve strategic objectives; and
    • be involved in professional bodies to grow HFS knowledge and awareness.
